DLC and Iraq War

On May 25th, there was a vote in the House merely to set a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq. It was called the Woolsey amendment named for its sponsor. The amendment was nothing radical, like asking for an immediate full withdrawal and for Bush to pay for war crimes for killing 50,000 Iraqi kids. It was just asking for something practical, something that moderates and centrists should be able to agree with. The bill failed. It only had support from 128 representatives.

Was there a difference in how DLC Democrats voted for the Woolsey amendment versus how non-DLC Democrats voted for it? 24 out of 38 DLC reps voted against the bill with one not voting. That is 63.2%. Out of non-DLC Dem reps, 55 out of 163 representatives voted against the amendment. That is 33.7%. So, yes, there was a significant difference. DLC reps were almost twice as likely to vote against the amendment than other Democratic reps.

2. How do DLCers differ from Libertarians?

It seems to me that DLCers being free marketeers, pro Iraq war, pro drilling in ANWAR, pro soc. security reform are just Libertarian infriltrators. Am I wrong? They figured out a third party has no chance, in our current system, so they took over the DNC, just like the Christo-facists took over the RNC.

3. There are definite similarities.

I guess I just see the DLCers as those who began as Dems, but want to keep up with the Repugs in terms of donor money.

Ever since the Supremes declared money to be "free speech", the Repugs have been selling our country off to the highest bidder. The greedier Dems are just trying to get in on the corporate dough -- at the expense of their constituents, democracy, the envt. etc.

It certainly could be that some otherwise-Libertarian candidates (who actually want a shot at being in office) see the DLC as a comfy place where they could feel at home. I just don't think it started out that way.

Bill Clinton, a big-time DLCer, used to be VERY progressive. It cost him the Governor's seat when he first attempted to be re-elected. He swerved to the right in order to get his second term ... and unfortunately it looks like he kept on going.

At least Terry McAwful is no longer DNC head. Hopefully Dean will keep up the fight for us. The RNC looks like a lost cause, at least for now. But who knows, they've alienated many in their base. Who will they count on now for votes? Constituents or vote-stealing machines?

In addition to his duties as the president of the PPI, Marshall kept himself busy in the last few years. Among other things, he served on the board of the Committee for the Liberation of Iraq, an organization co-chaired by Joe Lieberman and John McCain whose aim was to build bipartisan support for the invasion of Iraq.

Marshall also signed, at the outset of the war, a letter issued by the Project for the New American Century (PNAC) expressing support for the invasion. Marshall signed a similar letter sent to President Bush put out by the conservative Social Democrats/USA group on Feb. 25, 2003, just before the invasion. The SD/USA letter urged Bush to commit to "maintaining substantial U.S. military forces in Iraq for as long as may be required to ensure a stable, representative regime is in place and functioning."

One of just a handful of Marshall's co-signatories on that letter was Bruce Jackson, who also happens to be the head of the PNAC (whose letter Marshall also signed) and the founder of the aforementioned Committee for the Liberation of Iraq. Jackson is not only a neo-con of high rank and one of the chief pom-pom wavers for the war effort. He was also a vice president in the weapons division of Lockheed-Martin between 1993 and 2002—meaning that he was one of the implied targets of Bowling for Columbine, which came out in Jackson's last year with the company.

Clearly, Marshall was thinking about the good of the Democratic Party, and not the integrity of his grimy little network of missile-humping cronies, when he and Al From made the curious—and curiously conspicuous—decision to denounce Moore, Hollywood and France at the DLC meeting in early November.
