what's the worst thing we've learned about John Roberts?

A centrist Democrat is asking me to tell her what's bad about Roberts. She thinks he's a brilliant choice. So I thought I'd give her a list of the bad things about him. She's not impressed with the news that he lied about belonging to the Federalist Society.

Got anything? I just sent her the Civil Rights article for starters.

1. His haircut tells you everything you need to know.

2. Bush appointed him.

He could easily be the deciding vote in overturning Roe v. Wade. He could easily be the deciding vote on opposing campaign finance reform. He has expressed doubt that Federal authority extends to protecting endanged species and can easily be the deciding vote in restricting all sorts of environmental laws. Have you said your state-approved prayers today? He could decide that too.

3. Why he's a brilliant choice

There is virtually nothing on record about him. Most of what we do have is similarly elusive -- legal speculations, position papers written for someone else, and academic matter.

In addition, chances are he won't be all that radical a conservative, which means that apologist historians will have an opportunity to use the Roberts appointment as "evidence" of Bush's keen political acumen.

He has ruled in favor of corporate interests over the individual in all cases where he either argued, voted, or wrote opinions.

He has made statements that indicate that he is a strict constructionist, and would like to see anything that is not specifically stated in the Constitution overturned. That not only means Roe, but Brown v Board and who knows how many other decisions.
