"Scary" sucks

A common phrase I hear, or similar, is, "What the Republicans are doing to this country, is quite scary".

My goodness I cringe when I see in print, or hear over the media, use of that word to describe current events of the Repukes.
The descriptive words we use are important, I believe, and "scary" denotes being timid and weak.

1. Causing fright or alarm.
2. Easily scared; very timid.

How about using "chilling" or "alarming" instead?
"Frightening" is a little better but "scary"? Yuck.
Any others?
