Democrat seeks upset in southern Ohio election

CINCINNATI (AP) — Republican Jean Schmidt was first in line when the polls opened Tuesday and expressed confidence in her battle with Democrat Paul Hackett over a southwest Ohio congressional seat. Schmidt voted before 7 a.m. at a school in her Clermont County precinct. "We're going to be in first place at 7:30 this evening," she predicted. Schmidt was joined at the poll by a dozen supporters.

Hackett planned to vote later in the morning in the Cincinnati suburb of Indian Hill.

<snip>Both campaigns had TV and radio commercials sweeping the district, while campaign workers focused on get-out-the-vote efforts. Elections officials have projected turnout at about 15 percent in the seven-county southern Ohio district stretching from Cincinnati's eastern suburbs to largely rural Adams, Pike and Scioto counties.

Hackett has been the strongest Democratic candidate in decades in the district, which regularly re-elected Portman with more than 70 percent of the vote. Bush got 64 percent of the district's vote last November while winning Ohio.

From California, I'm getting the impression that this election is causing a lot of buzz. Fifteen percent seems abyssmal.
