MURRIETA - Two misdemeanor criminal charges have been filed against a Murrieta man who burned the American flag at a community event last month to protest the war in Iraq.
Riverside County district attorney officials charged Lee Henry Vollick, 19, with disturbing a public gathering and resisting arrest. Each charge carries a penalty of up to one year in jail, a fine not exceeding $1,000 or both, said Ingrid Wyatt, a district attorney's office spokeswoman.

He is scheduled to be arraigned on the two pending charges Aug. 15 at the Southwest Justice Center in French Valley. Vollick said in an interview after the incident that he burned the flag as an attempt to tell people the Iraq war is wrong and soldiers should not be dying for oil.
At the time of Vollick's arrest, police said he set the flag on fire with a cigarette lighter and refused to step aside as it smoldered. When he would not stand clear, a police officer, two off-duty officers and several onlookers grabbed him. Three days later, Vollick displayed bruises and welts he said he suffered from the incident.
