3. Did you mean "DLC"? If so, I agree completely
The greatest thing about a Hackett victory will be to convince the DLC-ers once and for all that running as an anti-war, anti-*, full-fledged, old-school Democrat WORKS!

and am sure you are. If Kerry hadn't been so ambiguous, maybe he'd have won. I'm very impressed with Hackett.

5. Not necessarily
It's beginning to look like there are different types of Dems for different districts. Remember, no Dem has received more than 35% of the vote in Ohio's 2nd since 1980. If a liberal/progressive Dem were running in that distrcit we still wouldn't get over 35%.

Likewise we have a moderate/conservative dem running against Sensenbrenner in Wisconsin...he actually stands a chance of winning.

In other parts of Wisconsin and Minnesota, a more liberal can win.

In the long run as long as they adhere to BASIC Democaratic Party principles, it's a plus....

34. The DNC?
I don't think it's dead. Remember, this was just one race in a special election. 2006 and 2008 are fast approaching. I can only hope the Democratic Party can turn the corner. I do have that hope. However, that being said, there is a hell of a lot of work to do to achieve it and a long search for some spines in the leadership's backs! At least Howard Dean has a spine.

Cincinnati Post newspaper. They don't consider him "liberal".

36. Thats what I thought.
The post thats on the front page is trying to pass this off as proof that all you have to do to win is to be "true to your liberal beliefs". Thats the spin.

The fact is this guy was an excellent candidate (looks, family, war hero,...) and really is sort of in the DLC mold in that he's for gun rights and against big government in general. And he's not for just cutting and running in Iraq. He seems moderate, not "liberal".

The lesson is the exact opposite that people are trying to suggest on this thread.

38. anti-war, but not pro immediate withdrawal.
He wants to have a stable situation in order to leave. How many people (including Dean) have been spewed at for that on DU.

I am happy to see that some people are coming back to a more reasonnable position.

39. I believe that you're misrepresenting...
Edited on Wed Aug-03-05 06:24 AM by Q
...the position of those who want to 'leave Iraq'. It has never been suggested that an 'unstable' situation should be left in Iraq. You're leaving the impression that a withdrawal would be worse than what's going on there right now.

It should be obvious to all observers that the instability in Iraq was CAUSED by the invasion and occupation. It would be easy to conclude that removing the cause of the instability would lead to a more stable Iraq.

In no way is it a 'moderate' position to stay in Iraq despite all the facts showing that it was and is an illegal, aggressive war. This would be an EXTREME RWing position. Withdrawing from Iraq under a peacekeeping plan would be a moderate to left position.

Close doesn't count ... The D's, one way or another have to WIN a fight soon ... Not block Bolton until he got a term apppointment, not lose CAFTY by two votes, not get close in Ohio ...

You had an IRAQ VET, who came CLOSE, on an anti-war capaign ... Any non vet D is going to face the whole non-support troops/traitor thing ...

Nothing more.

I am not representing anything concerning your position (I do not even agree with him, but am closer to your position. I'm just happy that people could support for a moment somebody who is not 100 % for what they think - This is so refreshing here).

44. The close call (or win) here also sends the GOP a message...
It says, "You can't take any district for granted."

It means they now have to spread money around in places they have never needed to before.

If nothing else, this will cause a sort of "virtual attrition" for the GOP.
