Which Big Name Dems showed up to stump for Hackett in Ohio?
Edited on Wed Aug-03-05 10:29 PM by KoKo01
Anyone know? Did Dean or anyone from DNC/DLC or DCC show up close to yesterday's election?

I ask because Ed Schultz said today that he didn't get the help he needed from the DNC. And, he said he should have brought his radio show there to support him.

I know he got alot of help from our Lefty Blogs and lots of private donations...but were the Big DEMS there?

16. Those would have been good.
Anyone else might have hurt as mere outsiders.

2. Think about it - no one could have been helpful in that district.
Ed Schultz was a total idiot yesterday - bashing national Dems. If nothing else proves that he is really a snake in the grass yesterday's program should have done it, even for casual listeners.

And for the record, the DNC and Dean quietly (operative word) gave money and organizational support to Hackett.

3. A Big name Dem could have shown up and helped do a fund raiser, though.

It was a high profile race for us Dems. And look how close it turned out. I'm not saying Dean should have shown up but what about Dems in secure seats in neighboring states? It might have upped the Dem turnout. Why do people give up on increasing the Dem vote by having big name Dems show some respect for them? It's not like every state was having an election yesterday that no one had time to go there?

Isn't this something we should be thinking about? Or, you think Shultz's criticism is way too harsh? If this was a test for how we will do in the mid-terms to show up the Repugs, then it seems to me that SOMEONE should have shown up who has broad national recognition who is now serving in the Senate or House of Reps. I think I go along with Schultz on this one. DNC/DLC/DCC needs to do better. He could have won if he had energized Dems. When one is a Dem in a heavy Repug District you feel alone these days. I live in one...so I know.

BTW: Not dissing Max Clelland. He's a great guy. But, someone who is currently in office might have been better along with Cleland

8. Name one. And just for the record he didn't need more money -
he had plenty. What he needed was a district not gerrymandered for a safe repug seat. Ed's criticism too harsh ? How about just wrong.

15. What do you call John Glenn?
A nobody? No. He is a very successful democrat. Astronaut, war veteran (WW2 and Korea) and Senator.

And didn't the DCCC? DFA helped Hackett a lot too. The DNC saw how the race was going and people were really working and doing really well and sent young volunteers and cash. Schultz wasn't obviously paying attention.

7. Dean and Democracy for America supported Hackett big time
Edited on Wed Aug-03-05 10:32 PM by Carolab

{snip}

When I won the Democratic primary for this contest, few people believed we had a shot at victory. But DFA put its faith in me—and went to work organizing on the ground and online. Your support helped build the greatest Democratic get-out-the-vote effort this district has ever known.

{snip}

Read the whole thing.

10. Thank Goddess for DFA!!!
And one of the DNC vice chairs, who was from Hackett's area in Ohio, came with a bus load of volunteers, to help Hackett's campaign.

17. Yes
I love DFA myself and how they are with grassworks. :) They're all very organized and that's one of the big major reason's I wanted Dean to be our chairman. I knew he was the right man for the job with all the success I've heard with DFA.

9. Wes Clark endorsed him, KoKo
And we had a lot of volunteers on the ground there, but I don't think Wes actually went to Ohio, at least I don't know about it, if he did. He may not be the kind of "Big Dem" you mean. He did make a robocall the day before the election and it was paid for by the DCCC.

I was looking at Hackett's site the other day wondering who else endorsed him, but there wasn't a list. Rahm Emmanuel gave him a lot of support, so I guess he must have endorsed him. Dean's DFA certainly supported Hackett.

Clark blogged this today:

I wanted to send a short note of thanks to the members of the WesPAC community for your tremendous support for Paul Hackett. Specifically, I would like to thank AlexM, Debrapatek, MeowMeow, Nelsons, Ohio Kidds, Richsezclarkforprez, Spring, Susan in Cleveland, and any others who helped Paul on the ground in OH-2. Make no mistake, the odds were firmly against us in this race, but with Paul's leadership and the support of folks like you, we almost did it.

And I take something very important away from the results of last night. Paul demonstrated that if we listen to our constituents and stand up for Democrats and Democratic principles, even in the face of withering attacks, we can compete anywhere.

My message today is to keep fighting. I will keep fighting. After Paul takes a much deserved break, I hope he decides to keep fighting. And I hope you'll join us. We have many important races this fall and in 2006, and as you showed yesterday, your support will make a difference.

Wes

12. Wes Clark recorded a robo-call for Hackett paid for by the DCCC, too
Here it is:

I and other Clarkistas who could not go to Ohio phonebanked for Hackett all weekend-Election Day. I personally called 120 people in the space of 4 days.

18. That's great and I read that alot of Clarkies went out and canvassed for
votes for him, too. But, Clark isn't elected to anything, so I was asking for Congresspeople or Senators who are now serving who are popular and might have stopped by to give a hand at a fund raiser.

Didn't he go fishing this week? :eyes: Guess salmon fishing was more important to Ed that helping Paul Hackett.

his show to Ohio. He felt Dems didn't do enough to support Hackett, apparently. So, that's why I came here and posted because I figured you guys would know the real scoop on this.

22. Well...maybe both of them did help Hackett to come as close as he did
to winning. John Glenn should have brought some folks out. I'm not sure if Ohioan's are that familiar with Max Cleland but his disabilities sure would have brought home the Bush War and reminded folks that War is Hell.

23. The DNC gave money and people
They put people on the streets in the district to campaign. They sent staff, at least one Vice Chair, and gave funds.

Some people just aren't ever satisfied.

24. Maybe people just didn't know
Sometimes they don't know, sometimes they're never happy. I think in this case it was a genuine inquiry.

25. You're right and I apologize
I read the original post as a criticism.

I do think, though, that the DCCC was a bit slow on the uptake with this race. I think they could have done more. But hindsight is always 20/20.

We have our work cut out for us in 2006 but I think we'll be ready.
