There economic and ecosystem die-offs were fait accompli decades ago. Peak Oil was known in 1977. Global warming has been well known but I'm not aware of how long.

It's deliberate. I have no idea what the strategy might be, but it's definitely contrary to the interests of the general public.

Also, far beyond massive funds have been funnelled into the "black budget" since WWII. Just before 2000, it was 1.7 then 2.3 trillion dollars. Whatever it's going toward is not in our interests.
