Did anyone else hear Mike Barnacle explode on Imus today?
Edited on Fri Aug-05-05 03:30 PM by tinfoilinfor2005
Mike Barnacle of the Boston Herald went into a rage this morning about the current administration and their (non) involvement of our dead soldiers and their families. It seems that the son of one of his friends was one of the Marines who died in the tank explosion. Mike was swearing pretty heavy duty but Imus backed him up saying "Good for you". I guess as it starts to hit home to more msm people we will begin to hear louder criticism.

Sure wish I had heard it. There's been alot of talk in Mass. about it as Kennedy, Kerry, and other lawmakers HAVE been showing up regularly to meet with the families.

3. Funny how the tune always changes when the reality hits close
to home. Sad that it has to come to this to make people open their eyes.

4. He was fantastic and Imus just clammed up.
He was on fire and totally speaking the truth. Imus finally said,"You're right."

Before you pile on about listening to Imus, I switch constantly between Imus, Morning Sedition, and Morning Edition, and tune out to most of Imus's unbelievably stupid banter. But sometimes the interviews are revealing.

I tried to e-mail Barnicle a "thanks". Not sure whether it's his site (96.9talk site) or my ancient computer that made accessibility impossibility. If anyone can get through consider thanking him for speaking the truth. He was great.

5. Yes, to his credit, he does get the good interviews
and is able to get them to people-speak. And I like David Gregory who is on there a lot. Fortunately I have a mute button once his macho cohorts start yapping.
You're right...Barnacle was on fire and should be recognized for his honesty and anger.

6. Here's transcript
Imus speaks to Boston Herald Columnist, Mike Barnicle about the growing death toll of U.S. military men and women in Iraq.

Imus: "What would be wrong with the President going to every one of these funerals?"

Mike Barnicle: "There is nothing wrong with it. I like the President, he's a nice guy, I like him. He's not a bad guy."

Imus: "How about that crazy guy at the Pentagon? Why didn't he go to any of them?"

Barnicle: "If he (Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld) worked for any company in corporate America, he would have been fired years ago. How about taking Karl Rove to some of these funerals? How about taking some of these god damn cheerleaders to some of these funerals? How about taking Rush Limbaugh to these funerals? They are on the radio and TV everyday with their pom-poms, 'This is the greatest thing we've ever done'. Go to the funeral! Take a look at the parents! Tell them, hey, you made a great sacrifice! They use the word sacrifice like baseball announcers say double play every night! They don't know what sacrifice is! Timmy Bell (U.S. Marine killed this week in Haditha, Iraq) is never coming back. He's not coming back. He's dead! Killed in a war! Underline the war! Wake up we are at war!"

moments later

Imus: "There have been 1,826 young men and women killed in Iraq as we speak, at this moment , and there's probably somebody dying right now."

Mike Barnicle: "Don, remember the day, and I'm sure you do, the week when you picked up Life Magazine and saw all those pictures of all those dead boys during the war in Vietnam? That's what we need now. That's what we need now. Remember the beautiful job that The New York Times did on the profiles of all the victim's of the World Trade Center? That's what we need now. We need all these big papers to prod these big people in Washington to figure out where we're going here and what has happened here and one of the ways to do it is to put these pictures, and these profiles, in our papers...not just the local township paper where they come from but big papers, big TV shows, where people get the chance to come home at the end of a vacation day or a work day in August or wherever they are and turn around and say, Jesus, God we are at war. Look at this handsome boy. He's dead."

16. "Look at this handsome boy.
He's dead."

I've looked at the handsome boys, and the less handsome boys, and it tears me up. I've look at the faces with joyful hope showing through their young eyes, I've looked at the faces of older men who knew better than to want to go to war (but had to anyway), and I've looked at the faces of men and boys who were confused and worried.

They're all dead. And too many women, as well.

Barnicle (who is an ass, actually) is absolutely right: we need a lot more of their photos and pix of their broken bodies and their flag-draped coffins in a lot more papers and on a lot more TV stations.

22. Sounds like barnacle doesn't
know bush as well as he thinks he does.

But maybe it's a good thing to preface that you like someone before you tear into what they did.

bush started this..him and he's partners in crime.

9. But Barnacle says Bush is "not a bad guy" and he's been an apologist ...
for Bush Inc. when I've seen him on cable TV shows like Hardball or Scarborough. When he was covering the general election, he always gave a pass to Bush/Cheney's transgressions and went out of his way to criticize the Democratic ticket.

These kind of Bushies who never blame Bush or only feel the pain the rest of us do when someone they know is hurt deosn't excite admiration in me.

27. Remember Mark Anthony's eulogy for Caeser?
William Shakespeare - Friends, Romans, countrymen (from Julius Caesar 3/2)

Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears;
I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him.
The evil that men do lives after them;
The good is oft interred with their bones;
So let it be with Caesar. The noble Brutus
Hath told you Caesar was ambitious:
If it were so, it was a grievous fault,
And grievously hath Caesar answer'd it.
Here, under leave of Brutus and the rest -
For Brutus is an honourable man;
So are they all, all honourable men -
Come I to speak in Caesar's funeral.
He was my friend, faithful and just to me:
But Brutus says he was ambitious;
And Brutus is an honourable man.
He hath brought many captives home to Rome
Whose ransoms did the general coffers fill:
Did this in Caesar seem ambitious?
When that the poor have cried, Caesar hath wept:
Ambition should be made of sterner stuff:
Yet Brutus says he was ambitious;
And Brutus is an honourable man.
You all did see that on the Lupercal
I thrice presented him a kingly crown,
Which he did thrice refuse: was this ambition?
Yet Brutus says he was ambitious;
And, sure, he is an honourable man.
I speak not to disprove what Brutus spoke,

But here I am to speak what I do know.
You all did love him once, not without cause:
What cause withholds you then, to mourn for him?
O judgment! thou art fled to brutish beasts,
And men have lost their reason. Bear with me;
My heart is in the coffin there with Caesar,
And I must pause till it come back to me.

11. I'ld be curious
what plagerist barnacle had to say before the war. Was he one of those cheerleaders? Is he one of the "oops, made a mistake. Sorry guys, no WMD's, but how the hell was I to know?" I know he used to be on msnbc, but can't remember if his show got canned before or after the invasion.

12. Also, notice how he goes out of his way to
excuse * from any blame and to say that he still likes him? Give me a break. The guy is still a lapdog for *, and refuses to hold him responsible! He doesn't sound too bright to me.

17. I don't trust him.
Not dumbya's fault? WTF?

Some DU'ers are excellent at finding opinions expressed in the past. Unfortunately, I'm not one of them. But I wouldn't be a bit surprised if plagerist barnicle thought the invasion was a mighty fine idea before it began. I could be wrong, but I'll wait for proof before I change my opinion of him. I would probably put money on the fact that he's changed his mind because it's now hit close to home.

As you pointed out, he still holds dumbya harmless.

24. I know the question was directed at merbex,
but I would like to answer too.

No. My scream isn't directed at you tinfoil, I'm just sick of these 'oops, sorry I didn't actually do some reporting & investigating & look at conflicting evidence that said insane hussein didn't have WMD's, wasn't a threat, that maybe dumbya and his crew were lying through their teeth" eff heads who now regret their insane cheerleading leading up to this fiasco. It's great that plagerist barnicle has seen the light, but it sounds as if it's taken the death of a friend's son.
I do seem to remember barnicle shifting a bit a few months or so ago & making more comments that could be taken as critism of the war. But if he was a cheerleader before, all I can say is fuck him & the horse he rode in on.

Again, tinfoil, this rant is not directed at you. A lot of DU'ers are better persons than I & can forgive. Having grown up during 'Nam, I can't.

really passionate anger from a msm journalist about the death toll. I certainly disagree with the "bush is a nice guy " b.s. But it is about time someone finally expressed some kind of emotion.

26. I totally agree.
Those journalists who did absolutely no reporting & now are making noises about what a mistake it all was.

Also, joe & jane average who believed everything they were told & did no digging on their own. There were plenty of non-mainstream press saying, Wait, insane hussein is probably not an imminent threat. & joe & jane average had a duty
Sorry. I get so pissed about this I can't even see straight.

28. Across the dial while that was going down, a repuke congress critter
was filling in for Laura Inghram and he was talking to some other repuke who wrote a book about Iraq who was saying that the terrorists are hoping the war gets reported here in the states so that people will turn against it. He was more or less saying that we should not report on the war because to do so would turn you against it and that favors the enemy.

29. Barnacle the puke was upset about the war he supported?
More Marines will die, along with many other GIs, if we persist in this foolishness of staying the course. We lost the war, which isn't bad considering we did to Iraq what Saddam did to Kuwait. Aggressor states should never be rewarded!

Let's bring the troops home now, and let's arrest and prosecute those responsible for this war.
