I've heard several of these guys, including the Chicago Trib guy--Jim Warren, make wishy washy statements like this and not at once point out that leaker in WH aside, Novak PRINTED the name of the agent so he's a leaker too. They are trying to absolve him.

a couple of reporters, one from the NY Times, the other from the Wall Street Journal, were talking about the Plame affair. Both of them showed, in the tone of their voices, their distain for Novak. So I don't think eveyone in the press is trying to excuse him.

The important thing about this, I think, is that it is a good indicator of the anxiety that those involved in the plot to expose Plame are under. It's funny, as I had posted a little essay in the middle of the week ("On a positive note") in which I stated that those who are being investigated were under a tremendous amount of pressure in the past two weeks.
