1. Because, for the most part, perception hasn't yet caught up to reality. NT

2. Because, to repubs, the things that

interfere in Americans' lives are usually things they don't like or support (not all Repubs, btw. There are pro-choice republicans who are not happy with the so-called pro-life bull being promulgated by the fundies).

Basically, to me, as long as business is not intruded upon, that's great. Abortion, sexuality, drug use-quite different to many conservatives.

Let's also remember that it's at the very heart of conservatism to advocate privilege and entitlements for those who most benefit from the "way things are." The arguments for 'smaller government' have never been solely "conservative" -- being the means by which the French Revolutionaries and Russian Revolutionaries pursued their goals.

5. when (most) conservatives say they want "less government"...

what they really mean is less government regulation over big business and what the super-rich do with their money. It has nothing to do with personal liberties (unless it involves owning a gun). Their credo: get government out of the boardroom and INTO the bedroom.

7. I don't think most conservatives really do....

support a smaller government. They are opposed to government programs
which raise their taxes (wether real or imaginary), but they support
government programs which they see as protecting their assets--like the
Military. The Military (whose real job is to protect American economic
interests overseas) is by far the most expensive government "program"
we have, but you won't find conservatives advocating it's reduction.

"Smaller, less intrusive government" is a meaningless mantra that
conservatives whip out to hide their selfish motivations.
