Begala Predicts: Bush Will Pardon Rove
Begala Predicts: Bush Will Pardon Rove

As other pundits have looked a the facts in the Plame-CIA leak case, Paul Begala takes a look at the future. In today's Huffington Post, he conjectures what might come about if Karl Rove ever has to answer to his treasonous doings. As a former White House speechwriter, he goes as far as to craft the speech that President Bush would give to pardon Rove:

My fellow Americans. We meet once again in dark and dangerous times. I remember well the terrible tragedy of September the 11th, 2001. Today, we have the terrorists on the run, and yet they attack our soldiers nearly every day in Iraq. They bomb tourists in Egypt, kill innocents in London and Madrid and Indonesia and Kenya. This truly is a global struggle against violent extremism.
This is not a conventional war, and it will not be fought nor won by conventional means. At the heart of our success will be tactics and techniques that I am not free to divulge to you -- strategies and secrets you will never know. At a time like this, in a post-September the 11th, 2001 world, preserving, protecting and defending our national security secrets is literally a matter of life and death.

That is why I was so angry when the name of one of our CIA agents was revealed two years ago. I vowed then to cooperate in every way to bring the wrongdoers to justice, and I have done so. But what started as an investigation into national security has gone off track. Those who seek to undermine me politically are now pursuing a course that will harm America's security and could invite another September the 11th, 2001.

5. Isn't this a little premature?
Does anyone here think it will really come to the point where he would have to give a pardon?

6. Yep...There is no doubt in my mind that bush would pardon Rove
regardless of the political fallout that would ensue.

bush does not care about the nation, nor does he care about justice....bush cares about himself and his 'friends'. Nothing else matters to him.

Too bad it took so long for people to figure this out....:(

7. He could pardon Rove the moment indictments are announced.
He could, if he wanted to, pardon him (and anyone else he felt like pardoning) BEFORE he's indicted. The only thing keepin him from pardoning Rove right now is that it's a tacit admission of wrongdoing--if he's innocent, why doies he need a pardon?

9. He is right - Bush will try to manipulate public with wartime Pres crap
RWingers have already done their best to trivialize the Plame leak and justify WH by trashing the Wilsons. If indictments are made, Bush will try to frame the matter as a minor concern blown out of proportion serving to distract from the more important concern of his waging an effective war on terror. I expect shameless manipulation and continued framing the matter as much ado about nothing only promoted by partisans attempting to undermine him during his war against terrorism.

However, I think Begala is limited in focusing just on Rove when other leakers are involved and case seems to have evolved into more serious areas of perjury, obstruction of justice and conspiracy.
