. . . .
Yet City Hall is in turmoil. Mr Daley's administration is reeling from a damaging federal corruption probe led by US federal attorney Patrick Fitzgerald - the same lawyer investigating whether White House officials illegally leaked the name of a covert CIA agent, Valerie Plame.
Mr Fitzgerald has filed criminal complaints against two city officials in Chicago, alleging "pervasive fraud" at City Hall and charging them with using political patronage to award jobs and faking tests for employees.
. . . .
The charges include evidence that the city hired "goofballs" who "should not have been awarded positions". In one case, a candidate for a city job was "a drunk".
. . . .
Mr Daley has not been accused of any wrongdoing. Yet many wonder how a mayor as powerful as Mr Daley could not have some inkling that patronage and corruption was as widespread as Mr Fitzgerald's charges indicate.
