"Socialism/democracy can't work for anything but a small group"
This is a claim that is universally made by anti-democratic and anti-socialist forces.

Which makes this comment, made during the Constitutional debates in 1787 by Governeur Morris of New Jersey, both funny and tart:

It has been a maxim in Political Science that Republican {i.e. non-monarchial} Government is not adapted to a large extent of Country, because the energy of the Executive Magistracy can not reach the extreme parts of it.


So, does anyone think it's still a maxim in political science?
