Tell me if I over-reacted
I was doing the Democrat booth thing this morning at the Fair. Since there were four of us, it was suggested that one or two should walk around for the sake of visibility and to direct folks to the booth if they asked. Since I was wearing a Dem t-shirt, I elected to do it.

After marching up and down several aisles, I ended up at the Repub booth. A couple days before, I'd bought "Support the Troops" button from them, as much to have a reason for being there as anything else.

So I was chatting with the woman behind the table about how dead it was, and why they had an MLK button to sell (she just said that's what they'd been sent). I got to the troops button and commented that it was sort of non-partisan.

She started to say, "Do you guys have... oh, of course you wouldn't... heh, heh."

I turned blue, then red.

Let me stop right there. Quick quiz...

1. Why did Erica turn blue, then red?
2. Did she over-react?

I want to see if you're having the same reaction I did, just from that.

1. her little joke was way offensive to me - I hope you said something
Edited on Tue Aug-09-05 02:25 PM by jean
by the way, her spokes-hero, Rush Limbaugh (played on audio on Al Franken's show today) said the liberal press is just sick - sick! - for doing body counts of the troops dying in Iraq.

He rustled some newspaper around while bloviating that it was so sick of liberals to count the war dead.

Tell that traitor 'she and her guys' are great at buttons, bandaid and bumper sticker patriotism.

Ask her if she supports Dem troops, or are they not as worthy as repub troops? By the way, ask her, does God bless America or only Republicans?

Oh, I forgot about our troops - no Dem candidate who has served in our military is honorable - did she buy the Swift Boat liars book?

In the real world of blood, guts and death, the repubs trash our troops. They use them, haul their dead bodies home in secret so they can't be honored and now don't want to even count their deaths. If they do survive, despite serving in bush's fiasco 'war' they aren't paid, aren't supported by medical coverage and receive NOTHING from bush.

8. I went from smiling to stone-faced
And I could tell my face was starting to glow.

"What was that supposed to mean," I asked. She tried to pass it off as just asking if we had buttons and bumperstickers. No, we are just an info booth (which is something on an off election year, they tell me). I just kept repeating "I don't like that. I support the troops. I really don't like that." And then I walked away while she was still trying to backtrack about how she only meant buttons and bumperstickers.

I walked away and cooled down, and stayed away from their booth the rest of my shift of walking.

4. I'd be livid and go off on all that Bush has done which is the exact
opposite of supporting the troops, what hypocrites they are and how the Democrats are the ones that are really supporting the troops. Is that what you did?

11. I could only say "I support the troops"
very angrily. And tell her how much I didn't like her comment. Then I left before I blew.

6. I know the DPW doesn't have buttons for sale at their table...
Edited on Tue Aug-09-05 02:17 PM by ClassWarrior
Is that what she meant? Or did she say it in that snakey, Republicon way?

If she was implying that - I'd have responded that Dems support the troops with action and effort, not buttons and magnets.

NGU.

9. whether she did or not
and maybe she did, I didn't take it that way. She said it not snakey, just off-handed, but that chuckle at the end got me. Why would you chuckle about us not having buttons and stuff?

Hey, do I owe you something for that bumpersticker you gave me? I should have asked on Saturday.

20. I showed it off at the booth today
Someone said "too late." Hey, he's still in office ain't he? Plenty of time to impeach.

So what do you think? About my Republican, I mean?

I always wonder about their booth placement, too. Right between the flag booth and the National Guard booth. Wonder if they plan that.

7. Lemme give this a try...
You turned blue because you held your breath in order to maintain your composure rather than rant that crazy freeper bitch into the ground.

You turned red because you finally decided it was okay to breathe again, but were still so mad you could have jammed fifty "Support the Troops" buttons down her piehole.

I managed a quick "I support the troops. I don't like that" as she stammered then I left.

14. Your simple declarative sentence was enough
"I don't like that." To the point, doesn't accuse the dimbulb of saying anything untoward, and gives you a good excuse to walk away.

That's all you needed to do. Good job.

17. Didn't even start crying, which is what I normally do when I'm that mad
But thinking of it later, I wondered if I'd jumped to the wrong conclusion.

You guys are reacting the same way I did though, so I don't think so. If all she was asking about was if we had buttons and stickers, why the chuckle?

wearing a button or bumper sticker is all there is to it. It makes their life a lot easier. Forgive me for calling them simple minded.
