Poll question: Do we still like Michael Moore?
Edited on Tue Aug-09-05 10:47 PM by dhinojosa
Just wondering. We haven't heard his name in a while, he used to be our political frontman. In fact, we haven't heard his name much since a little after the election here on DU. So, what's going on, do we still like Michael Moore?

5. I used to LOVE Moore when I first saw Roger and Me
in highschool -he just got too self-righteous.
He talks about things I care about.
and I agree technically with the things he says.
But sometimes he tries a little too hard to make the sale.
He has this snotty sort of Falwellesque arrogance and utter ideological over-confidence about him that starts to ruin everything he says.
and it angers me because it distracts from the validity of the issues he's addressing.

6. I greatly admire the man and his work
but Fahrenheit 9/11 was made to be too much about him, whether by the media or MM, and that is why I don't think the film had the effect it could have had. I still respect the man and I have a feeling he has stayed out of the spotlight for most of this year because he became bigger, figuratively, than the causes he championed.

His documentary style made the form more enteraining but I hope in his next effort he remains behind the camera a bit more while still achieving his goals.

Abu Grahib and Fahrenheit was almost the one two punch that knocked him out. RWers HATE him and that's enough reason to like him for me. Agree with him or not, Roger and Me, Fahrenheit, and Bowling for Columbine got people talking about important issues and that's always worthwhile.

19. The only thing I don't really like about him is this...
I can't tell if he's with the Democrats or not. Sure, in this last election he support Kerry, but only because he hated Bush so much. In 2000 he supported Nader, and we all know how that turned out. He has often said that there isn't much difference between Republicans and Democrats (in fact, back in 2001, he was saying that there wasn't much difference between the Clinton and Bush administrations). Then again, he was a big Clinton supporter during his impeachment trials. I just can't tell whose side he's on.

Of course, I do agree with him on many issues.

50. My sentiments exactly!
God bless the peacemakers! He's the mirror opposite in personality to Jimmy Carter but BOTH men are working toward non-violent resolution of conflicts throughout the world.

It really pissed me off when Nader (who I do respect politically) disrespected Moore for being obese. Too bad Ralph can't admit that self-righteousness and pride are also unbecoming.

I miss his sloppy clothes because he looked comfortable in them. I respect Michael Moore ten times more than the corporate criminals in Armani suits that are in the process of gutting the middle class of this country (and WORLD).

IMO, you're part of our team (liberals seeking non-violent solutions to todays crises) any day Mr. Michael Moore. :loveya:

He's the same old muchraker that Ben Hamper wrote about in "Impressions of a Rivethead"... Brash, funny, careless, loving, learning, and, impetuous.

I am such a big fan that after Mike closed down his discussion board, I started one of my own with several long time members of Mike's board. Some of us have known each other for 8 years and more.

Mike's site (sans discussion) is great. It is updated daily with topical issues and action alerts. Well worth a regular visit.

He asked Michael Moore about Vigilant Guardian, Tripod II, et al, and got the question and response on videotape. Moore's response was that it would be "unpatriotic" to ask about Vigilant Guardian, Tripod II, et al.

35. I really do like Michael Moore a lot, but more than that,
I admire what he has tried to do for this country in the best way that he knew how consistently and forcefully.

He's been slimed and sleazed by some of the greatest dark forces in this country....and he's no coward about it.

Imagined getting booed at the Academy Awards for winnin, and then for exercising our country given right of free speech!

I'm sure that he is doing more good work....and spending time with his family.

For those who demand perfection and have a "problem"

36. Michael Moore Rules...
The right hates him, so he must be good. Anything they like is invariably EVIL, and anything they hate is invariably GOOD. It's pretty easy to figure out which side to support...

Anything that comes out of the mouths of the neocons is the exact opposite of the truth...just reverse their assertions:

"Iraq has WMD": That means Iraq DOESN'T have WMD...

"America spreads freedom around the world": That means America DOESN'T spread freedom around the world...

"Mission Accomplished": That means it's NOT accomplished...

"Michael Moore is a liar": That means he's NOT a liar...

41. He's been very busy in my neighborhood
While he hasn't been in the national spotlight he has been very busy. First of all he is active in local politics in northern Michigan. He has lent his name and talents to several local parties and we've benefitted greatly! Additionally he co-sponsored a film festival here, the first annual, establishing a wonderful event. Even the REthugs in our town loved it, our local businesses raked in the dough and it was a huge success!

On top of this he is making his next movie.

I'm going to a political event tomorrow in his county (BTW his wife, Kathleen Glynn, is an officer of that county's Dem party). I'll see them there.

He isn't in the spotlight but he is doing more for our neglected corner of the world than you might guess. For ages the party has neglected this region cause it doesn't have the votes Detroit and Grand Rapids does. With a big migration of folks into our area though that is changing. So far the only one to notice and appreciate the value of this chunk of the state is MM and we will be forever grateful.

Cheers,
Julie

56. yeah he's real extreme
it's extreme to believe that American workers and the towns they live in shouldn't be exploited by multinational corporations.

it's extreme to question why so many Americans feel the need to murder each other at a rate so much higher than any other industrialized nation.

it's extreme to question this administrations motivations for war.

it's extreme to think that the insurance and pharmaceutical industries in this country are ripping off the most vulnerable of us while making obscene profits with the help and support of the Republican party and turning us into the third world of industrialized nations.

I think we know what you mean when you say extreme...

Michael Moore is an American Patriot - period.

People may not like what he says or how he says it but he has been standing up to corruption and power in this country his entire adult life.

I'd take another Michael Moore any day over some weak spined puke who doesn't want to stir up any trouble or god forbid upset anyone.

Fuck that shit!

He's human and will make mistakes occasionally - the biggest one I can think of was his support of Nader in the 2000 election. To his credit he did go down to Florida and try to get people not to vote for Nader just before the election but unfortunately the damage had already been done.

Also, to his credit he had the good sense to support Wes Clark in the Democratic primaries last time around and then move his support to Kerry after Kerry became the nominee.

If we didn't have him we would be want to invent him

He's unique and he's very effective and pisses off the GOP! They hate the fucker because he is effective.

I for one am enormously grateful to him for all that he's done and will continue to support his good work.

'do we still like michael moore?', who is immensely popular here and elsewhere. And I don't know why he wouldn't still be very popular---the poll question reads the same to me as: 'do we still like ice cream?' or 'do we still like sunny days?'

61. "Kiss of death"? Maybe, but...
I'm glad he didn't endorse someone else. Michael Moore cares passionately about this country, and is never afraid to speak out about what matters, what he believes in, no matter how the other side tries to slime him.

Same can be said for Wes Clark, and I think they respect that in each other.

Maybe Clark lost some primary votes with Moore's endorsement. Maybe he wouldn't have gotten those votes anyway. That's all water under the bridge. But Clark always defended Moore and his right to speak his beliefs. We need a LOT more of that in our party leaders, not less.

I liked Michael Moore in 2000 when he endorsed Nader to the chagrin of many Democrats. I like him now. And I don't guess it much matters to me if no one else on the planet likes the guy. I don't need any particular buyoff from Democrats, progressives, or any other group to know I like the guy and his work.

65. I like him, but don't agree with everything that he says
Edited on Wed Aug-10-05 03:11 PM by Hippo_Tron
I consdier him to be the Rush Limbaugh of our side, except for the fact that he's not a drug addicted asshole who is motivated by profit. That being said, I can't accept everything that he says as true while at the same time criticizing right wingers for letting Rush do their thinking for them. I liked F-9/11 and it absolutely made some great and very important points, but every now and then he does use a few tricks to skew things in his direction. BTW, even though F-9/11 was a more important movie for people to see, I felt that Bowling for Columbine was a better movie. I still love that line... "In George Bush's America, the poor come last."

66. People tend to forget that what Michael Moore
Edited on Wed Aug-10-05 04:00 PM by marions ghost
does best he does in films. That is his voice. That's his platform.
Also books, but they are secondary. Those who are disappointed in his 'leadership' since last year need to realize that he just about killed himself trying to get The Resident out of office. If the election hadn't been fixed in so many ways, I believe John Kerry would have had MM to thank for a significant part (even if KE couldn't be seen doing that publicly).

So, undoubtedly disgusted by the third election grand theft, MM hunkered down to work on his next documentary while the rightwing propanganda mill went into full swing to further trash him and marginalize anyone who could be connected with him. It worked of course. Michael = Bad, in neanderthal mind. When Michael emerges, he'll emerge again with force. That's his style. I wouldn't expect visibility always from Michael Moore--I'd expect him to come out like a bear out of the cave, with his latest Weapon of Mass Enlightenment.

I'm glad to see that he's supporting Cindy on his website. But MM shouldn't be a receptacle for all our desperate unmet needs for inspiring, honest, reality-based leadership. He can't do it all.

68. You could have watched F-9-11 without audio and the points still
would have been made. every picture tells a story and all that...
Some people say Moore manipulates?? - how can you argue with stock-footage!

Moore gathers some relevant news, he receives emails from the troops thanking him for his service check it out, see what's new.

70. HE alone started the whole ball rolling on how and OPPOSI(TION Party
should behave.

If it weren't for him, Dean and the all the others would still be stuck in neutral.

Now as for Kerry, BIG TIME MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT.

74. What a stupid question.
We don't see him much because he's not promoting anything right now.

Next poll:

JKF...we used to see him a lot, but not anymore. Do we still like JFK?

75. I put "Not as much" because I had hoped he was leading to a
John Kerry victory, and while of course it isn't his fault that John Kerry wasn't inaugurated, and Michael Moore did more than most people to help, John Kerry isn't president.
