Senior interior minister official kidnapped in Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Gunmen kidnapped a senior Iraqi Interior Ministry official Wednesday as he drove his car in central Baghdad, police said.

The kidnapping occurred in Baghdad's Andalus Square when gunmen stopped Brig. Gen. Khudayer Abbas, who heads the administrative affairs office at the Interior Ministry.

3. For a group that's running out of steam

They seem to be remarkably effective in subverting the process of installing Democracy 1.0 in Iraq, no?

And now they're moving from mere subversion of the process (a relatively easy thing to do) to creating their own parallel process right under the occupation. And that's not an easy thing to do at all. If the U.S. occupation can't even keep its puppets installed in the capital, what confidence do the Iraqis have that they can guarantee anything?

This whole thing is rolling down a slope and picking up speed.

5. Either this radical shia coup will be less tolerant of sunnis or the U.S.

or both. If he is a follower of Sadr he will try to move close to the Sunni but he may, on the other hand, be a Shia that wants to fight back against the Sunni insurgents with less impugnity.

We will see. Either way, it is bad news for the U.S. plan.

... in Iran, there was a tremendous political battle between the clerics and the democracy movement first started by Mossadegh. Within months, the Revolutionary Guards, which were under the control of the clerics, had established local control in dozens of smaller cities.

Sounds as if the same thing is going on in Iraq right now, in lesser fashion.
