Time for `Game' to End
I heard a quote from Karl Rove that he felt Joseph Wilson's wife, Valerie Plame, was ``fair game.'' I can think of some rotten things that criminals caught red-handed have said, but this has to be one of the lowest. Richard Nixon's ``I am not a crook'' comes to mind. Now that the truth is coming to light about another corrupt Republican administration, the spin is flying furiously. Some facts we now know:
• Rove and the White House have repeatedly lied about his role in the leak.
• President Bush said he would fire anyone involved.
• Rove identified Plame, in possible violation of law: At the very least we know he identified the covert CIA agent as ``Wilson's wife'' and that ``she worked at the agency on WMD.''
• The outing of Plame was retribution against a critic of Iraq intelligence, former ambassador Joseph Wilson.
• The White House is silent now but has spoken previously while the investigation was ongoing. But spokesman Scott McClellan has said, ``It's simply not true that (Rove) was involved in leaking classified information.''
The idea that the White House has gone silent smacks of coverup. Outing a covert CIA operative, regardless of the motive, was a despicable act of treason and should be prosecuted.
Indictments are sure to come, but at the very least, in light of national security, Rove should be stripped of his security clearance and asked to take a leave of absence until the criminal investigation concludes. The man ``in charge'' should fire him, but we all have to wonder who is really in charge.
The criminal acts of the Bush administration have been spun repeatedly, and with the help of a willfully ignorant public and a corporate media unwilling to report the truth, we have reached this very sorry state. It is now time for action. Karl Rove must go.
