3. They've matured and so has their music.
It's nice to see. For the record, I didn't like their early stuff much, but my kids did. I'm really liking their current offerings. I think it's great that there are still musicians who can appeal to multiple generations.

15. Their music isn't loud enough anymore though.
I miss the ear bleeding stuff they put out in the early 90s.

2. It may help America pay attention
I'm from an the Vietnam generation and I think something like this is a sign that we may be waking up in the US. There's a way to go, but the video was impressive. Thanks.

5. The song is ok but the video sucks
I guess it's because I'm younger but I have the opposite view of many here. Green Day's older stuff is much better than the American Idiot album. Though I love the album's message, it isn't their true music and they made it to sell a lot of albums.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Dylan didn't do anything worthwhile after his 3rd album, either.

I would have like the boy girl stuff to be in the background of the song not breaking it up like that!! I love that album though and it's a good thing because my 14 y/o plays it CONSTANTLY.....CONSTANTLY....I MEAN CONSTANTLY....

It holds up pretty good though, I gotta admit!

7. I'll buy it if for no other reason but to cancel out some freeper
that will boycott it.

I like it though. I had previously written them off as being somewhat lightweight, but maybe I'm wrong

11. Love the American Idiot
Edited on Fri Aug-12-05 10:19 AM by kwolf68
Great album in my view. Far more mature work.

I love punk rock...Bad Religion is my favorite band, but Pennywise has a new cD out and a song called "Fox TV" that is really cool

Make way for the next sensation
Factual Manipulation
Stay tuned for the next creation
Department of misinformation
Arrogance that makes you shiver
Ignorance and we deliver
If truth doesn't count fo something
I choose to believe in nothing

It's primetime for the middle class
You don't like it shove it up your ass
Fair and balanced prejury
And it's all on Fox TV
Delusion will rule day in this society
Intellectual property in bankruptcy
And you can't escape
We've been sold out we can get out
Lies sold tragedy all on your TV

Fabricated Journalism
Junk News and Jingoism
Media's our new religion
The pulpit is your television
Got news and we're comin' at ya
Network TV propaganda
Our credibility is degrading
We're patriots for Nielsen ratings

It's primetime for the middle class
You don't like it shove it up your ass
Fair and balanced prejury
And it's all on Fox TV
Delusion will rule day in this society

13. "back in the day"...
I was 19 when draft registration restarted under Ronald Raygun. The Clash awakened me politically, hence the avatar I wear proudly. Back then, the airwaves were just like the MSM. London Calling is IMHO one of the greatest albums of all time and received little airplay. That was when I stopped listening to the shit that is now most closely associated with Clear Channel.

16. The Clash

Is the only punk band I rate ahead of Bad Religion (though BR is my faves).

And yes...I rank "London Calling" as the #1 Punk album of all time. I have a list compiled that I hope to put on my fledgling Website one day.

17. London Calling just had this political theme that connected with me
The Spanish Civil War of the 1930s was just a tiny fact I remembered from history until I heard that album. That album's songs were just too-darn-catchy to be called punk, though.

26. Punk is open ended
Edited on Fri Aug-12-05 12:40 PM by kwolf68
As you may well know punk in its earliest incarnation wasn’t about “sounding” a certain way. It was more an “ethic”.

Bands/artists as diverse as Ramones, Talking Heads, Television, The Jam, Sex Pistols, Patty Smith, Blondie, The Clash, and Evlis Costello were all lumped under the banner of “punk” and a few exceptions there none of those bands sound like any of the others.

Punk has a sound…gritty sped-up guitars, few if any solos, aggression, an image-less image, and either very funny or very political lyrics (in the case of a band like NOFX funny and political at the same time).

The Clash were punk legends, but they were also MUSICAL legends as well. The loss of Joe Strummer still stings me like the loss of Paul Wellstone. RIP to them both. I will never forget either of them.

32. The Sex Pistols were proud that God Save the Queen had no chorus
They could write that song without falling back on the typical song writing structure that used the same chorus over and over again. They were part of a revolution!!!

Punk isn't my main choice for music (that would be swing), but some of it really is good.

24. I don't think so. I'm w/ you. And it doesn't take much.
The photo of the young soldier killed yesterday or day before did it for me. (Sorry, don't have link to DU thread). It's just all way too much and I think MORE people should be crying. Everywhere in the world people should be crying. We should cry and sob and scream at the top of our lungs until this madness is STOPPED!

and that video is an example of why.

If you haven't already heard it, I also strongly recommend "Holiday" off the American Idiot CD. Very anti-Bush. Heck, the whole CD is fabulous.

so you don't have to go to your computer to stream the video. If you have digital cable (for example, Comcast), you can view it any time you like.

31. I wasn't that impressed
There was too much narrative breaking up the song. They should have left the imagery as background to the song. It would have been more powerful that way.

But I love Green Day. I just saw there show in Chicago on Wednesday. It was great.
