Thinking of pulling the plug on my John Conyers postings
Edited on Fri Aug-12-05 09:46 AM by paineinthearse
Getting responses is like pulling teeth. It it were not for a handful of "regulars' they would sink into oblivion.

I am at a loss to understand why the one consistant Democratic leader in the areas of Guckert, Election reform, DSM, media, Rove, Cindy, etc etc etc garners relatively little DU response. I've been posting, on average, one per day in the GDP forum, with a pointing link in the JC group.

Take for example the latest, where he is calling for our input on the patriot act. Posted yesterday, it elicited just one reply, and that was from a freeper - see Conyers: PATRIOT Act Abuses - Let me know your thoughts http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=2003018&mesg_id=2003018

Same goes with the JC forum. Indended for discussion of this man's works, it has become a repository of links only - see http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topics&forum=340 With so little traffic, it is at risk of being dropped: "Also, a few of the DU Groups do not get very much traffic. In the next week or so, we will go through the Groups and decide which ones should be removed." See http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=announcement&id=172

If this post gets any positive replies and/or the JC group sees some traffic, I will resume Sunday or Monday. Until then, go to www.johnconyers.com

Have a good weekend, I'm going canoeing.

i haven't mastered navigating this place yet. that said, fewer forums might be a good thing. i only have time to look at 'latest' and 'greatest' right now with an ocassional foray into 'florida'.

i have another forum (orchids, not political) and mucho emails from various progressive sites to wade through in my spare time. it's hard to keep up sometimes when you work.

please point me to it so i can add it to my 'favorites'. tia

7. Here is a sample of JC's work, from the first page of the group
Edited on Fri Aug-12-05 09:40 AM by paineinthearse
The man is prolific, his work deserves a wider audience. I don't know exaxtly what the admins mean by amount of traffic, but our posting frequency is approximately 1 or 2/day, which I would define as "light", thus at risk of losing the forum.

14. Separate groups for the most part kill a subject.
Put something in a group and it helps to focus the subject. It also kills the circulation. No response means no original article in the long run. If we put Cindy in her own group we will kill the movement in a week. If someone doesn't know about John, they will never learn, he's hidden in a group. If you post in a general area and then have a duplicate link in a group, that would allow focus and general attention. If you really want to kill a group, start with poetry, it is dead dead dead.

The practice is to

1. Post in GDP, usually with a title beginning with "John Conyers:..."

2. A "pointer" post is made in the JC group, with a link to GDP.

All one needs to do is go to the JC group, open the ones they have not read, click the link and read (and hopefully comment).

15. DU mechanics
When a post receives a reply, the date/time stamp is reset it goes back to the top of the heap as the "most recent".

When posts do not receive a reply, they sink and sink and sink.

I never assumed people do not read the JC posts, but be honest, how often do you go to page 2, 3, 4 or beyond searching for them?

18. Wait, wait, wait
Folks read them. I read most and appreciate them. I've posted this before but I often don't post in threads I read. I don't have much to ad. If I see it sinking, then I will kick it. Otherwise, I don't post. I assume others do the same.

I appreciate the Conyer's news. I was going to get to meet him in two weeks but life interfered and I have to give my spot away. He's my hero. He's fought so long. He has such wisdom and perseverence. I know how frustrating it is to not get replies. I rarely get replies to my threads. Sometimes, my most innocuous posts get many replies. I can't figure out what gets folks attention.

19. I think it depends on when you post a thread
I have started threads sometimes that get just a few responses and fall off the front page. Then, a few hours later someone else starts the exact same thread and it gets 30 responses.

I think it depends a lot on who is around and logged in when you post a thread. You might try posting it at a different time of day. Just a thought.

20. Futility
I think the problem is that Conyer's has been blackballed by the media courtesy of the Bush elite. This is no fault of his of course. We can blame the media and the growing group of spineless democrats.

Hasn't anyone else noticed these days that we have a pack of neocons hiding as democrats? i.e. Pryor, Feinstein, Lieberman, Clinton, Biden, etc. The government has moved so far to the right, that what is considered 'centrist' these days is more rightwing than Nixon was.

If COnyer's were just to grab a hold of an issue that he can get institutional support for, I'm afraid he will keep being left out of the loop. An issue that has Greenpeace or the AARP behind him. Not just the rabble rousers.

25. Ask Cindy to connect her questions to questions in Conyer's May 5th letter
Edited on Fri Aug-12-05 10:49 AM by pat_k
We must be creative in getting attention for Conyers work.

For example, do you know anyone close to Cindy? Ask her to tie her questions for Bush to the questions Congressman Conyers (joined by 88 members of Congress and more than 560,000 citizens) demanded answers to on May 5th.

For example, Cindy could expand her key message as follows:

I want to know what my son died for. I am asking the same questions Americans across this country are asking. On May 5, eighty-eight members of Congress and more than half-a-million concerned citizens joined Congressman John Conyers to demand answers to vital questions about this war. Three months later we are all still waiting for answers.

She could also expand the talking points she hits in interviews to tie in demands for an an Impeachment inquiry. For example:

Americans are asking whether the President has committed impeachable offenses; they are asking whether it is a High Crime to "fix the facts" and terrorize the nation with the threat of a mushroom cloud; they are asking whether it is a high crime to use threats of annihilation to coerce the nation into launching a criminal war of aggression.

If the message is a good one that needs to get out - and I think anything from Rep. Conyers qualifies for that - rest assured that there are exponentially more people reading it than kicking it.

I signed up for his blog in the beginning, but like you, I have been unable to make comments since the changes also. I did get an email saying that my registration was complete, but when I try to log on, I get a message that I cannot post under the name I am using. I thought maybe someone else had the same name.

Maybe we should let him know this ~ I just gave up but continued to read ~ in fact I was among those who suggested he go to a registering system ~ ironic, now I can't get in! :-)

PITA, please do not give up ~ I read everything that is related to Conyers but don't always post as I am on dialup and it is extremely slow at times. But I will make the effort to acknowledge having read your posts.

Imo, Rep. Conyers is one of our greatest ~ he is amazing in that he is on every important issue as soon as he can get there ~ I love that man ~ and I so appreciate your posts, PITA ~ it's the least we could do, considering his tireless work on our behalf, to take a few minutes to acknowledge the work he does ~ thank you too for your efforts. Have fun canoeing ~ :-)

38. Please consider..
... that some posts get read but not necessarily replied to.

I like hearing what Conyers is up to, I keep hoping more Dems will follow his lead. But I don't necessarily have anything to add, so I don't reply.

This points up a "flaw" in the way this (and almost all) bulletin board works. Replies cause an increase in popularity but not views.

It would be technically pretty easy to remedy that, but it would use up server "bandwidth" to do the calculations, so it will probably never happen.

In the future, I will try to add some kind of reply, even if it is just a "kick" or "bump" to keep good threads alive.

I read them. I don't respond too often but JC is one of the most important elements of our opposition to these bastards and I always want to hear what he has to say.

48. I'm sorry paineinthearse! I'm just overwhelemed with so many things to
read here at DU and so much stuff that has to be done in my life. Like many people here, I think, we have a hard time keeping up with it all. Please don't assume that we aren't interested or don't read -- but clearly we can't read everything.

Thanks for posting the JC information!

49. I've decided you can't get in a snit if people don't respond on this board
Why? Because there are so many people here and so many posts it moves F-A-S-T. That's both a good and a bad thing. Mostly good. Keep posting. If nothing else it's cathartic and there's always the odd chance a person in a position to cause change might be moved by your post.

It is sad fact that positive posts sink, and that flamebait rises. Still one must not stop posting great content like your Conyers posts.

55. Don't quit -- here's the deal
I'm on DU less than I used to be (sorta), but even when I'm here for HOURS in a day, I still miss it most of the time, but when I do see it I value it greatly (and will try to make a point of posting in it to say that hereafter).

I'm on, I've got 3 or 4 DU windows open, I'm posting and posting, and posting some more... and I still miss it.

Don't give up, it's like talking to a parade here, ya know?

58. PITA - I LOVE your post about Conyers!
I don't have time to go to every board that I want to go onto.

That's why I enjoy being on DU, because people post from all different blogs.

John Conyers is awesome. I always read your posts, even if I don't reply.

And I appreciate that you keep us informed on what the #1 democrat is doing now, because he is always on top of everything.

This is for you
so don't stop posting DAMMIT!

59. Don't Go
It does suck when John Conyers has done so much - thanks to him, a lot of the shit in Ohio has been in the media - Anybody read "What Went Wrong In Ohio"? Aesome, just awesome, just like my hero, John Conyers.

61. You have to post "Is COnyers GAY?"
"Did COnyers EAT A LIVE BABY?", etc, etc..

SO many "Look at me!" posts actually that actual news gets crowded out.. in a way it reminds me that the Media is part of the human condition, that we are creatures that want STIMULATION and are willing to eat junk food and fill up with JUNK info..

Fat, Salt and Lies seem to sell really well..

I've been working on Video, to get the word out so that people who want them can play them over and over and SHARE what Conyers has discovered or called panels over..

Been sick the past couple of days, but am very close to finishing off the "Rove's War" Dvd which will combine, Conyers June 16th DSMemos, Wexler's hearing, DSM town hall stuff, etc.. all into one big video that will lay it all on the line so that anyone can "get it" because it's such an intensely complex web of lies and deceit..

Like in my flash works I like to take complex subjects that are overarching and important and make them digestable :)

Hopefully when I launch the DVD we'll get some more info going on with one of my Heroes in DC..

Keep the posts coming, let's all give them a kick when we see them?

Thanks paine

62. I didn't know there was a seprate Conyers Forum here...sorry...but
I understand some of your concern. I think it's hard for many folks to see Conyers, Waxman constantly writing letters to Chimp and having them ignored...and holding hearings and being pushed into basment of Capitol and fighting for us by releasing info on "Raw Story" when the Media who should take the lead for Conyers and our FIGHTERS in the Dem Party like Washington Post and New York Times ignore EVERYTHING the Black Caucus, and Waxman, Boxer and the few others who support us activists on the Left ignore everything they say or do.

Newcomers to DU want to see more action. They gravitate to the newest story and figure that if something isn't the "Lead Article" every day then it's hard to understand why it's worth a bother. Some of us who have been here awhile try our best to keep up with it all, but it's hard to keep up that fight to keep kicking articles and posting about Conyers, Waxman, and the others when the life cycle of a news story or article about their efforts is about two days at max.

Also it's Summer and some are away, and Cindy Sheehan and other stories about Chimp are breaking fast and hard.

It's just too much info hitting us all at once. But, going canoeing is probably good. I wish to hell I could get away from all of it...it would be healthy..:-(.

Anyway, thanks for posting the reminder that we should be paying more attention to those who are working so hard for us. Not sure what we can add by going onto Conyers Blog or posting in the Forum here on DU....but you make a point that we have maybe been "slackers" on this.

I hope we can do better.

63. BTW: Just because you don't see responses doesn't mean that
"WE" are not reading. I've read probably all your posts...I'm here alot...and there are a HUGE amount of Lurkers. Not everyone can keep up fervor...but what's posted here gets passed everywhere and inspires many that you or I would never realize or know about.

Getting answers on DU can be discouraging at times...but the inspiration isn't ignored. At least that's been my experience, for what it's worth.

65. I'm a reader of the Conyers forum
and other forums, but I don't post much, anywhere. The Conyers forum is another place for me to read about Conyers and the things he is working on. Please don't quit, maybe this reminder will help generate more traffic to the Conyers forum. I do appreciate your time and effort involved in keeping up the forum. Thank you!
