Viggo Cares
Here is a photograph of true compassion.

Sacramento Bee Photo/Renée C. Bye

The expression in the this photo is so striking: Cindy Sheehan's raw emotion, the gently joined hands and the stoic dignity, the silent witness to insanely painful reality (painfully insane reality?) in Viggo Mortensen's bearing.

This is the difference between "us" and "them."

We're not afraid to care.

In the eye of a storm

Vacaville woman's quest draws notice but no meeting with President Bush

By M.S. Enkoji -- Bee Staff Writer
August 12, 2005, Story appeared on Page A1 of The Bee

CRAWFORD, Texas - The quest of a once unassuming Vacaville woman to meet with President Bush about her slain soldier son is taking on iconic status alongside a Texas cow pasture.

<snip>

Asked if she meant to put Vacaville on the map, Sheehan said, "I think I put Crawford on the map."

<snip>

Rain on Wednesday and a steady stream of interviews had left Sheehan feverish and raspy-voiced. On Thursday she took refuge inside a van as her "handlers" held well-wishers and the media at bay.

As Sheehan rested in the van, Viggo Mortensen, star of "The Lord of the Rings" film trilogy, pulled up in a rental car and slipped into the van beside Sheehan.

The two talked quietly for a few moments, then Mortensen emerged.

"It was an honor to be able to meet her," the actor said.

"I'm not on vacation, but I managed to come out here to see her," he added, taking a verbal jab at the president.

1. Viggo is the shit!
I infinitely respect that guy. What a caring person. He didn't need to do that, but he had the class and guts to go see her anyway. Cindy is a great woman and I'm glad someone famous acknowledged that.

I hope that other celebs follow his lead
and for the same reason; that they are passionate about the cause. Sadly, celebrities are more "real" to our sorry excuse for media than the events that directly impact our lives.If more come, the media will keep it's lense focused on Sheehan. I doubt that many would have the sincerity and dignity that Mr. Mortensen projects, though. He is a true activist and patriot.

3. From that home page... wow!
"All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not whither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken.
A light from the shadow shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king."

7. On Charlie Rose w/ Frodo to promote Lord of The Rings
Edited on Sat Aug-13-05 12:10 AM by omega minimo
Viggo wore a funky, tight (thrift store?) tweed jacket over a T shirt. In the little V space between the lapels, he had written "NO BLOOD FOR OIL."

He wasn't cute or coy about it. The crudely drawn slogan was just THERE, unremarked.

Mortensen was low-key, serious, discussed the film and politics. Frodo did a lot of the talking.

Viggo was SO low-key and serious, so UNstarlike-- he acted like "just a guy" sitting at a table talking, unpretentious.

He's a great example of the multi-talented, multi-faceted, politically aware, engaged, com/passionate generation b/w 'Baby Boom" and "Generation XYZ."

(Hey, when DU called for "our celebrity candidate" recently, I nominated VIGGO)

8. Viggo is amazing. He is a true artist. Not to mention, he owns horses.
He bought some of the horses from LOTR & Hidalgo. I love the photo essay published a while back that showed him letting a pony eat oatmeal out of a bowl from his breakfast table. I love that. My horse would come in the kitchen if she lived at my house!

We should send Viggo thank you letters. :)

9. Are we not Viggo?
Edited on Sat Aug-13-05 12:29 AM by omega minimo
Yes, he is a global Renaissance man with punk street cred-- purty fukkin kyewl.............

The thing that struck me about the photo was his dignity, his humanity, his motionless intensity (spose that's why he's an actor) that had nothing to do with his babeness.

The best thing about the Viggo Mortensen package is that he is a real human being. He can be an example-- he don't need to be a King.

11. He's a good and real human being just like us Duers.
We're not perfect, by any means, but we try to be kind to others, we try to be creative and productive and we try to make our lives worthwhile.

<snip>

To reclaim the cowboy ideal as embodied in the legend of Frank T. Hopkins from a certain part-time resident of Crawford, Texas, he says: "When your individualism has to do with finding yourself and behaving with dignity in the world, then you are finding a place in the world and you are respecting the individualism of others.

"But when individualism such as we see sometimes by personalities in our country and people that govern ..."

The hint is dropped subtly. What he really wants to say is: Bush. Iraq. War. Unilateralism.

Mr. Mortensen continues: "When your individualism necessarily involves crushing or preventing others from having their own individual experience — whether they be individuals or nations — then you're doing something quite different."

15. No wonder I am in love with this man, Viggo.

he truly cares and is not afraid to show his emotions and passions, this is why so many of us love him, his compassion shows in everything he does.

The fact that he is a stud also helps.

:loveya: Viggo
