John Kerry Delivers the Democratic Hispanic Radio Address Marking the 70th Anniversary of the Social Security Act
August 13th, 2005

John Kerry delivered the Democratic Hispanic Radio Address today, marking tomorrow as the 70th anniversary of the Social Security Act being signed into law.

The following is the translation of this week’s Democratic Hispanic Radio Address delivered by Senator John Kerry.

“Hello, this is Senator John Kerry from Massachusetts.

This Sunday – August 14th – marks the 70th anniversary of the day the Social Security Act was signed into law by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Social Security has been called the most successful government program in the world because it lifted millions of seniors out of poverty.

Hispanics are less likely to have additional sources of retirement income, and therefore after a lifetime of hard work rely on Social Security to a greater extent. Without Social Security, 56 percent of Hispanics would live in poverty.

As the Ranking Member of the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee I am deeply concerned about the detrimental effect that President Bush’s plan to privatize Social Security would have on Hispanic small businesses.

2. Democrats do more for small businesses than the GOP and it's about time
the media catches up to that fact and STOPS lying to the American people - the GOP only takes care of large corporations, not small businesses who they only seek to swallow up.

4. Democrats Demand Conditions on Social Security, Bush Talks War
John Kerry wasn’t the only Democrat talking about Social Security today, Reps. John Salazar and Nancy Pelosi both spoke out today, as well. However, he would change Social Security as we know it, chose to speak of something else in his Radio Address today (more on that below).

On the eve of Social Security’s 70th anniversary, Democrats said on Saturday they are ready to move toward revamping the financially troubled retirement program but warned against stripping away benefits to retirees and relying on private accounts for funding.

We have a moral obligation to stand up and protect Social Security for the next 70 years and beyond — that means stopping privatization and dropping partisan demands for private accounts,” said Rep. John Salazar, a Colorado Democrat, in his response to President George W. Bush’s radio address.

5. Thanks for posting!
He is reaching out trying to deliver our messages to everybody. I think it is impressive that he delivered it in Spanish.

6. Let me get this straight. He gave the address in Spanish?
I know he addressed a Hispanic audience during their, geez I can't remember what the event was called. All I remember is reading that he gave part of his speech in Spanish. I think it was in the Rolling Stone. And the RS reporter talked about how the reporters for the other newspapers were jaded, talking about what a stupid event it was and how tepid the response had been, even though it had looked like a rather good response to the RS reporter.

I guess Kerry wasn't wining and dining them enough to get on their good side like Bush did.
