Bush: Can't meet Cindy because he must "go on with my life"

Cox News Service

CRAWFORD, Texas - President Bush, noting that lots of people want to talk to the president and “it’s also important for me to go on with my life,” on Saturday defended his decision not to meet with the grieving mom of a soldier killed in Iraq.

Bush said he is aware of the anti-war sentiments of Cindy Sheehan and others who have joined her protest near the Bush ranch.

“But whether it be here or in Washington or anywhere else, there’s somebody who has got something to say to the president, that’s part of the job,” Bush said on the ranch. “And I think it’s important for me to be thoughtful and sensitive to those who have got something to say.”

“But,” he added, “I think it’s also important for me to go on with my life, to keep a balanced life.”

76. OMG... it's a real quote...??!!!!???
Edited on Sun Aug-14-05 01:22 AM by VolcanoJen
When I first read that, I thought, "No way did Bush tell some reporter, in reference to grieving war mothers who wish to talk with him, that he had to "get on with his life" while either riding a bike or talking about riding a bike.

No freaking way did he say that, in that flip context. That's just too callous, too outrageous, that's got to be bullshit.

That's what I thought. Oh my God. He really did say that. I think it's uncanny that he still possesses the ability to shock me daily. Wow.

Who wants to bet Russert will highlight that quote in his "reading to grown men" segment on Press the Meet tomorrow?? Yeh, me neither.

then i came back to this thread, found a link, clicked and saw the article. i set it up to print. and my printer is messing up so it's in a holding pattern. i closed the site and when i clicked on the link again they are asking me to tell them about myself--so now i have to sign up to see the article again. crap. i'm not signing up to the sight that's for sure. hopefully my printer will kick in tomorrow.

i turned my computer off and restarted and it printed that first article: bush may claim spot in history for fitness

this new link: bush defends ignoring protest is dated sunday8/14 (the other one didn't have a date on it) and the first one talks about bushie bike riding in the first few paragraphs. the new one also shows that another person contributed to the story (credit given at end).

interesting. it's changed. but they left in that callous quote about the chimp going on with his life.

and may the lord have mercy on his soul.

There is absolutely nothing he could have said that was a) stupider and b) proves that he doesn't care about anybody but himself - something that is not well thought of in a president.

This statement will kill him. This is his I am not a crook moment.

37. you are so right.
George Bush pulled out the shovel and started digging. He didn't stop until he dug his own Grave.

No one coerced him into it. He voluntarily made this statement, "must go on with my life". It's so amazing, it just leaves you breathless.

And again, I really do believe he's been backed into a corner. Every movement is deadly for him politically right now. While she waits in the ditch about a mile down the road, Bush stammers and stutters and sinks his own ship.

I believe it's those white wooden crosses that made the electric currents disconnect themselves in his brain.

Bush has always been insulated from his actions - until yesterday. There are a few threads about Bush driving by in his SUV with tinted glass. White is a radiant color. It'll come right through the tinted glass. He could not fail to see them.

Edited on Sat Aug-13-05 07:00 PM by Gonnabuymeagun
a real honest to God conversation with some one who's anti-war. I would have SO much more respec for Bush if he would engage in an intellectually honest debate, but I guess that's a losing proposition.

On the other hand I don't think its fair to say that Bush hasn't responded to our views, perhaps he's answered them with BS, but he answered them.

Sorry didn't mean to defend Bush. Don't mistake me, I still think he's an idiot

edited because "anti-war type" sounded really wrong.

in big trouble.

Normally he sticks to a carefully prepared script, pretty much. Only ad-libbing when he is speaking of relatively safe subjects.

But this kind of idiotic statement is a sign they are really scrambling. And it illustrates that they have not come up with a strategy to deal with Cindy.

Amazing what happens to cowards when someone stands up to them.

There may be some embarrassing videotape (such as the genuinely stupid remarks he made about Native American tribes last summer) that makes the rounds on TV, but there will be no hounding by the press. Generally, they don't hang things around Bush's neck the way they do with Democrats. A Democrat would have never gotten away with terming 2001 a "fabulous year."

On edit: We don't yet have the power in terms of talk radio and the like to mobilize a proper lambasting of Bush in the media. The time is coming soon, but it's not here yet.

because it seemed to contain a complete thought expressed with some words over one syllable, and apparently, no stuttering and floundering. However, the reporter probably just cleaned it up. The thought that was expressed, however, was just as selfish and clueless as his comments usually are.:puke:

48. You're right
it does look cleaner in print. They don't put the pauses or stutters when his spoken words are written.
I've noticed that when I've read reports that quote statements I saw him make. He can sound almost lucid.

But you are even more right that this statement sounds BAD any way it is put.

What the hell is a balanced life to that man? There is nothing balanced about it.
He is the frigging president and it really wasn't made to be a 9 to 4 job, 5 days per week. If he wants that job and not have to deal with "difficult" people...he'd have to be perhaps a stock clerk. Someone who works in the back of a business. I'm not sure he could work that hard though.
And someone ought to tell him as president he doesn't just represent his sycophants, his prescreened crowds.

Can we make a citizen's arrest?

33. Where is the turd blossom these days...?
You'd think that he or someone would hit the supply closet over at Homeland Security and get some duct tape for *'s mouth, prep him, and invite Cindy over to the ranch just to get this over with.

Hey, BTW...Cindy is all over NPR today, even on the BBC. * and his puppet-masters have met their match, and it is a smart, articulate, passionate woman named Cindy Sheehan. She never, ever stumbles on her message...no matter how tired she is...Cindy has found the balance in her life - a true cause!

44. Woe to him for denying others the advantages he enjoys.
Surrounded by yes-men and yes-women, wealthy though incompetent at business, given to a cruel sense of humor, Bush struts through life taking his pleasure and delivering a boot in the face to millions who really do need help. That's hardly the definition of the balanced life. Callous, perhaps, but not balanced.

And remember, DUers, Bush said this at the end of 2001, when the U.S. was at war and thousands were dead in the terrorist attacks: "All in all, it's been a fabulous year for Laura and me."

Bush may claim spot in history for fitness
By Ken Herman
Cox News Service

<snip>
Saturday's ride came as anti-war protesters, rallying behind Cindy Sheehan, a California mom whose son Casey died in Iraq, gathered on a road near the Bush ranch. Bush has steadfastly refused Sheehan's request to meet with her.

"Whether it be here or in Washington or anywhere else, there's somebody who has got something to say to the president, that's part of the job," Bush said of bike-riding while a grieving mom was pleading to talk with him. "And I think it's important for me to be thoughtful and sensitive to those who have got something to say. But I think it's also important for me to go on with my life, to keep a balanced life."

Americans, Bush said, want their president in shape and "in a position to make good, crisp decisions."

"And part of my being is to be outside exercising. So I'm mindful of what goes on around me. On the other hand, I'm also mindful that I've got a life to live, and will do so," he said.

104. Americans want their president in shape?!!! WTF?
Does he really believe that (1) we think about what shape he or any president is in as a qualification for the job or (2) that anyone but George W. Asshole thinks that his working out will make him a better leader?

It appears that exercise is all he can come up with as a rationale for what he's doing -- and not doing -- in Crawford.

Edited on Sun Aug-14-05 02:45 AM by Left Brain
Randi would be just the person to air this narcissistic b.s. on her braodcast -- over and over again, as she does with with Rummy's infamous "Who Knows?"

How can anyone read or hear that quote and not be chilled to the bone? How wonderful for dubya that he has a life to go on living. He should fall to his knees and thank his God for the precious gift of life every day. More than 1,800 of our sons and daughters lie cold in their graves, their own precious lives cut short by this man and his administration's lies, deception, and self-serving agendas. He has no right to even think about having a "balanced life" while the lives of America's fighting men and women are being snuffed out at his insistence.

This ain't no 9-to-5 job you've got here, buddy. You're on the taxpayers' dime. Get your butt back to work and forget about balancing your life until you bring every last one of our sons and daughters home. It's the very least you can do for those who have sacrificed so much.

Each time I think I can't get any more furious or disgusted, something like this happens. Sick, just sick.

right in this very article we're talking about.

"One woman who has known him for many years is not pleased by the 'seasoned politician' look.
'I just don't like having an almost 60-year-old white-haired son,' Barbara Bush said in Atlanta last month."

To be fair, this was a while ago, and not said in the context of Cindy's loss. But I bet Cindy would have considered herself lucky, a few years down the road, to have an "almost 60-year-old white-haired son" named Casey.

129. I have a suggestion for him--
if he wants to "go on with his life," he can damn well resign and get the hell out of my sight.

131. There's an old Jewish saying that goes:
God Bless you and keep you...far away from me."

I also think it is important for bush to go on with his life...far away from me.

President Bush: God Bless You and Keep You...far away from me.

132. What an ODD thing to say.
It's sociolinguistically ODD. Usually people say "I need to go on with my life" when something horrible has happened to THEM. They've lost a loved one, been victim of a crime or some other kind of nastiness.

But nothing horrible has happened to Junior. He has a protester. This is a tragedy?

The response he gave implies that he feels he is the aggrieved party. How very odd.

137. What more proof do you need, America!
Our so-called "President" Bush is a raving paranoid megalomaniac with a messiah complex, a persecution complex and delusions of grandeur. He's completely insensitive to the suffering of others. Lives mean absolutely nothing to him.

140. proof?
He's a dyslexic sociopathic loser in the service of evil men who will not hesitate to toss his fool ass to the wolves as a crumb to the disenchanted multitudes and then we'll really see some shit come down.

In another century he'd most certainly be a hemophiliac.

I'm deadly serious. The evilness of the cabal surrounding this nitwit is the real enemy and bicycle boy is just a distraction.

They will not hesitate to destroy him when it suits their purposes. All that matters is that their ends are achieved and they are so close now they can taste it.

Focus your energy on the real threat to civilization and life as we know it.

They have bunkers.

There's a reason.

:wow:

It's also important for me to go on with my life???
IT'S ALSO IMPORTANT FOR ME TO GO ON WITH MY LIFE?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

We still have thousands of young men and women in Iraq! They are getting maimed and killed everyday! Their lives and the lives of their families are being destroyed! Over 100,000 Iraqis have died and more are dying every minute - their lives (and their country) are also destroyed and Iraqi women are terrified about the fundamentalist takeover which will make them nothing more than the property of men!!! BUT YOU THINK IT'S IMPORTANT TO GO ON WITH YOUR LIFE????????

:grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr:
:grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr:

143. Funny, when they are out campaigning, they want to talk to all of us that
they can, well, especially for the high-dollar dinners.

Where is Jesse Jackson? Where is Al Sharpton? Where are the democratic senators and representatives?

Where are the rich donors to the Democratic Party?

I notice Bush wants to ride his tricycle with Lance Armstrong. I know Armstrong is a Democrat. Lance needs to add one condition to his bike ride with the president. He needs to tell Bush he would be honored (gag); however, he feels strongly that Mr. Bush should meet with Cindy Sheehan . . . either meet with her privately OR with Armstrong himself.

Some consider Armstrong a hero due to his struggles and accomplishments through diversity.

I consider Cindy Sheehan a hero along with her son Casey. A veterans mother should not be treated as if she does not exist.

Bush can welcome the Saudis by grabbing their hands and leading them into his home, welcoming them with open arms, and at the same time knowing that the majority of the hijackers were Saudis. Knowing that the Saudis were paying Palestinian suicide bombers $25,000.00 to their families after they become Martyrs. That the Saudis believe in Wahadism, which is one of the most extreme parts of the Muslim religion . . . but he cannot take the time to talk to one mother whose son died fighting a war that he knew was a lie; however, the young man kept his word of honor, and went wherever his Commander in Chief sent him.

Even if Cindy does not get to speak with Bush, he sure isn't going to get the relaxing vacation he expects every other month. At least with Cindy protesting, and the other supporters there, hopefully, he will have to continue to explain his reason for ignoring this mother to the press.

145. His shameful treatment of Cindy is
going to come back to bite him in the butt. The longer this drags on the more likely it is that members of his own party who are hearing from their constituents are going to be urging him to meet with her. I'm surprised Rove has let it go on this long and gain the momentum it has. Now it's reached the point where his excuses look feeble and pathetic, but he'd still rather have a hot poker up his ass than talk to her. When he finally agrees to give her a few minutes of his precious time, the question is going to be, "What took you so long?"
For chimp this is a big lose-lose.

148. They don't gotta be there. She take care of herself, need more like her th
ere. But if you mean why don't they speak up. Wouldn't be prudent, shouldn't do it, as his father might say.

But you are right, no bigfoot democratic "leaders" seem to want to touch this with a ten-foot pole, since most have decided we need more troops there to "finish the mission". Their silence is in part about cross promotion of each other through money and support, with emphasis on money.

No better argument than that presented here in this case that there's not a goddamn dimes worth of difference when it counts this big between the two parties!

And you are right about the effect on the perception of his "relaxing vacation" and that he must face questions.
