By addressing rising fears about military escalation in the Middle East, Mr Schröder, who is seeking a third term in elections scheduled for September 18, is bringing foreign policy to a campaign hitherto dominated by the economy. The move is reminiscent of the last general election three years ago, when the chancellor reversed unfavourable ratings weeks before the poll by categorically opposing the looming US-led invasion of Iraq and eventually scraped back into power.
Addressing the opening rally in his Social Democratic party's campaign at the weekend, Mr Schröder said the US and its allies in the war in Iraq should not repeat the mistakes of the past.
The chancellor was reacting to an interview given by US President George W. Bush to an Israeli television channel, in which he refused to rule out any option to prevent Iran developing a nuclear arsenal.
