Nominate Cindy Sheehan for Nobel Peace Prize
Several people are working to get Cindy Sheehan and/or the organization "Gold Star Families for Peace" nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Please read the thread linked to in this post.

The following thread is on the greatest page but under a different heading---Vinca had the idea first, and KathmanduKid thought it would get greater response if under the heading you read when you got here. Please nominate THIS thread for greatest page so that we can keep it kicked until we find someone here at DU, along with Jimmy Carter to do the nomination--if he can't anyone here at DU with qualifications under the rule can. (again, follow link)

Again, want to give credit where it's due--first started with Vinca. Thanks to her, and to KathmanduKid for this suggestion.

5. Feelings, What feelings? People are being killed Iraq, but he has to ...
get on with his life.

Madre Mia!!

Even if he feels that way, he should have enough grey matter not say that.

16. And from me
It's an EXCELLENT idea, if for no other reason than to rub salt into the wounds of those sniveling bush-apologists who think the Nobel Peace Prize and every other frickin' award for greatness should be lavished upon his shitty little head.

13. The Nobel rules for who could nominate also seemed to indicate
Senators and Congresspeople could nominate. How about Conyers, McKinney, Kucinich, Boxer, Sanders, Kennedy? Jody Williams has a home about 10 miles from me. I'll see if she's in town.

23. Unless they changed the rules
Edited on Tue Aug-16-05 03:06 AM by Sgent
the only people who can nominate are winners of the prize, and members of the Norwiegn parliment. Although many people send letters or requests, those are the only nominations that actually get considered.

So hit up President Carter or the lady who fought land mines, or another winner. Failing that, a member of parliment (not congress) has to do the nomination.

24. Yep... They changed the rules
Nominators

New nomination rules, effective from 2003. Compared to the old rules the list of nominators has been slightly expanded.

Any one of the following persons is entitled to submit proposals:

* members of national assemblies and governments;
* members of international courts of law;
* university chancellors; university professors of social science, history, philosophy, law and theology;
* leaders of peace research institutes and institutes of foreign affairs;
* former Nobel Peace Prize laureates;
* board members of organisations that have received the Nobel Peace Prize;
* present and past members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee; (committee members must present their nomination at the latest at the first committee meeting after February 1);
* former advisers at the Norwegian Nobel Institute.

25. Wouldn't members of national assemblies and governments
include U.S. Senators and Congresspeople? I was thinking about this overnight and it occurred to me the person most deserving of making the nomination is John Conyers . . . for obvious reasons.

26. Please follow the link in the post..
It is directly from Nobel, and it has a number of classes of people who can nominate, including professors of law, history, theology, etc.---if such a person exists in DU, they can nominate.

27. I did read it, but it would be nice if someone like Conyers, who
has worked so hard, could nominate. I suppose there's nothing wrong with multiple nominations. There must be people on DU who fit the categories.

28. I'm with you,. Vinca...
I was responding to the post which said that only former winners and Nobel Committee members can nominate...You're right, let's ask as many people as we can until we get a commitment from somebody.

Peace.
