Hitting the trail with nation's cyclist in chief (Forget Iraq)
Looks like the latest pr stunt is working. AP did a breathless "hero building" article on the resident's biking prowess as well. This one talks about how "dangerous" is *'s sport.

Hitting the trail with nation's cyclist in chief
Even the leader of the free world needs to get away sometimes. But how? At about 25 mph with almost a dozen companions.

"There's something exhilarating about heading down a hill at 25 mph on a mountain bike," a mud-spattered Bush says after a ride at his ranch.
TRANSCRIPT: a chat from the bike
---------------

CRAWFORD, Texas - Standing on the driveway outside his home, President Bush explains the rules for people who go mountain biking with him.

It will be a vigorous workout. It is not a race. And no one, the president says with a smile, is allowed to pass him.

"This is a chance," he says, "for me to show you a little slice of heaven."

The president's clothes show his favorite sport can be dangerous. His mountain biking shorts have holes on the front from last month's high-speed wipeout on a slick road in Scotland.

2. He couldn't buy NEW shorts?
I bet he goes through several pair a week.

"There's something exhilarating about heading down a hill at 25 mph on a mountain bike"

There's something idiotic about running over a cop in Scotland going much slower.

4. He's fallen off THREE times recently...(nothing to brag about George!)
If he wasn't so tone deaf, he would realize that drawing attention to his bike riding is hardly inspiring!

5. He Is So Not A Real Cyclist
Edited on Mon Aug-15-05 03:41 PM by CAcyclist
Texas doesn't even have any real hills to climb anyway. 600 feet climbing is baby stuff. And it shouldn't take 2 hours to travel 17 miles!

He has to make that rule that no one is allowed to pass him, otherwise most would probably leave him in the dust.

"I like speed," he says. He has gotten to 32 mph on a hill at Camp David, lightning-fast when you're riding knobby tires on a paved road."

32 mph on a paved road is NOT lightning fast. Moderately fast, maybe.

"To warm up, he climbs aboard his $3,100 Trek (a gift from the bike company) and leads the group along asphalt roads. "

What?? He rides a mountain bike on a paved road? I can see riding a paved road to get to the trail but this is his ranch - so that means he went to the trouble of paving the road himself - or graveling it since it looks like a gravel road - that takes most of the fun out of mountain biking.

And that picture - look at his shirt - it's a regular shirt, not a biking jersey. You need a biking jersey so it will stay put when you are riding really fast and it will wick sweat away so you don't get chilled. The men behind him are real bikers - you can tell by their arms. Compare them to Bush. Major difference.

7. Big surprise:
"Trailing the president and Peleton One, as he calls his riding group, are agents and a medical team in trucks and SUVs."

The booboo brigade.

6. I just sent an email to Bill Adair
"This is journalism? Have all members of the media completely lost their minds, as well as their integrity and credibility? This article is the most sickening, fawning piece of trash I’ve read since that person took office, worse than what’s found on Fox News. There are Americans dying in a war he created. News worth reporting can’t be that hard to find."

8. I think this part is wrong:
"Washington bureau chief Bill Adair can be reached at adair@sptimes.com or 202 463-0575."

It should read "Washington bureau chief Bill Adair can be reached underneath the president's desk where he will remain until 2008."
