Response From Subway
I wrote a letter to Subway about their participation in sponsoring the "Freedom March". Below is the response.

Dear Subway Customer,

This is just one of the many activities and charitable events that local
Subway markets support across the country.

The event you are referring to, the America Supports You Freedom Walk on
Sept. 11, 2005, is one that is a local promotion supported by the
franchisees in the DC area.

As part of this event, the local franchisees will provide bottled water
to
the walkers. They chose to be part of this
event because it will raise money to build a 9/11 memorial in the
Pentagon.

The local Subway market supported the rescue workers during 9/11 and
even
operate a Subway restaurant in the Pentagon.

Subway restaurants are individually owned and operated by franchisees
who
are proud to be part of the communities they serve.

Sincerely,
Heather Mills

1. I've seen this before, and I still don't know
where the "raise money to build a 9/11 memorial in the Pentagon" part comes in. I've looked at the official website, and there's zilch about a fundraising effort.

3. In my letter
I told her that Subway could help veterans that found their benefits cut by this administration. Support for this event was wrong since the invasion of Iraq was based on lies. (short version)

2. While it's true that Subways ARE individually owned as franchisees.....
.....it's also true that Subway Corporate headquarters assigns regional managers to ensure that each franchisee complies with Subway's corporate policies (usually menu, store design, etc)

That being the case, if Subway corporate had a problem with a given promotion, and especially if other Subway franchisees from other parts of the country thought this could impact their bottom line (i.e. a boycott) and voiced their opinions to the gang at Milford CT, I doubt that Subway would allow their DC afilliates to go through with it.

So in other words, I don't think Heather was being entirely truthful.

4. Subway is evil
Edited on Thu Aug-18-05 08:37 PM by MindPilot
My neighborhood is kind of lower middle class (yeah, like half million dollar houses are lower middle class) but anyhow it's an old neighborhood and very diverse.

I work 30 miles away in a much more affluent community of mostly retired people. The Subway near my house charges almost a dollar more for a 12' sandwich than at the one near my work.

In other words, they charge poor people more--a lot more--than people for whom a buck a sandwich ain't nothing.

I got about the same response from them; individually owned franchises.
