Whenever I am asked what do Democrats stand for, I don't reply: saving social security, prescription benefits for the elderly, healt care for all Americans, clean water and air....Well, to be truthful, I have never answered that question that way. That is my mockery of our Democratic consultants/strategists.

Actually my answer to the question is: We stand for the preservation of the Republic and its democratic institutions. The Democratic party stands for "We the People of these United States."

Then I continue: The Republicans to replace our republic with a divine right monarchy, with Bush as king. I ask them, isn't it ironic that we rebelled against one king George only to eventually replace him with another king George?

I could easily have said something along the lines: "The establishment Dems suck and I will not give them a cent of my money." Or some such thing. Rather, I tried to provide something constructive. It is good to criticize, it is also good to offer a solution. You don't like my suggestion, fine. Let's hear why.

2. Actually

I'd say that the Republicans want to install some sort of fascist plutocracy where a small group of wealthy people and corporations exhibit authoritarian control over all aspects of our lives.

3. The problem is...

Most Americans don't give a snake's fart about "the Republic and its democratic institutions." They do care about having a job that pays a living wage. They care about having a safe, secure home in a safe, secure neighborhood. They care about having shelter against illness and other misfortune. They care about being able to retire before they die and not having to work themselves to death. They care about living in an environment that isn't so poisoned it will kill them and sicken their children.

Answers like yours are why the Republicans keep winning: The GOP is at least talking about these issues and offering solutions, no matter how half-baked those solutions might be.

Republicans talk in broad strokes: personal responsibility, lower taxes, family values. They use the same marketing that successfully sells products.

4. I don't understand

What is bad about any of the things you listed? I don't see media consultants in wanting clean water and air, for instance, and frankly, with dittoheads brainwashed into thinking there's no problem, I don't see where that's such a popular stance most days. It's just true.

We are for the poor, and the elderly, and the minority, the out of work, those who need health care, woman's rights, gay rights. We're the "we care" party as opposed to the "gimme" party.

I urge all of us to contact our party headquarters and get in touch with local members of the Platform Committees if we have ideas on what the Platforms should say. This is an opportunity to have input now!
