Kinky for Texas Governor?
Just ran across an article in the New Yorker (print version) about Kinky Friedman run for Governorship of Texas.
Here's the link to the online article
http://www.newyorker.com/fact/content/articles/050822fa_fact
and a brief snip from the web site.
Could be an interesting election season in Texas.

<snip>
Kinky, who never learned to sit still much, has grown tired of his second career—this year, at the age of sixty, he announced that his most recent mystery will be his last—and has sought out a third. He intends to be the governor of Texas.
At nine o'clock on a bright May morning, near the start of his first real campaign swing, the candidate was sitting in the shabby ground-floor restaurant of the Doubletree Hotel in downtown Houston, wondering what to have for breakfast. “The decisions that kill me are the little ones,” Kinky told me later. “Wardrobe kills me. I have two outfits. I have my Waylon Jennings vest, which is this booger here that Waylon gave me, and I have my preaching coat, and every morning it takes me half the goddam day to figure which one I'm going to wear.” On this occasion, he had gone with the vest—the preaching coat is usually reserved for more formal occasions—a slightly weather-beaten black leather number, worn over a black shirt and jeans, topped off with his customary black Stetson and the first of eight or ten cigars (Montecristo No. 2s) that he smokes each day. “The Governor has decided on pancakes!” he barked, finally. “Jewford, are there pancakes at this buffet? Do you see any kind of pancakes anywhere?”

2. Imus has him on all the time
I'd love to see him win...he has some plain, common sense. A bit of a Renaissance Man, that Kinky...musician, writer, knows a bit about everything, and understands life. Plus, he would be the first Jewish governor of the state, I think...

Plus, that song ASSHOLE FROM EL PASO is one of my favorites!

7. They ain't makin' Jews like Jesus anymore...
It's such a stinging commentary on the attitudes in this country...particularly Texas. Sorry Texans...

He also used to tell this great story that epitomizes the GOP.

It seems a Texas millionaire was having what he considered a run of bad luck, so he was praying at a statue of Jesus. He said, "Dear Jesus, ten of my oil wells have stopped pumping, I had to sell three of my five ranches and my jet plane is being repossessed. I need your help."

Just then, the Texan heard a voice and saw a little man kneeling in prayer on the other side of the statue, as the man said, "Dear Jesus, my truck won't run, I haven't been able to find a job in weeks, they might turn the lights off in my house. My kids are sick and I can't buy them medicine. Please help me, Jesus."

The Texan walked around the statue of Jesus to the man on the other side, reached into his pocket and peeled off three or four one hundred dollar bills, as he said, "Look, little buddy, don't be bothering Jesus with this crap, he's busy."

Of course, the typical GOP'er wouldn't peel off those hundred dollar bills...

8. You don't have to apologize to Texas -- we've been into Kinky for 30 years

To make your statement correct, you should say that Kinky's stinging commentaries are levied against narrow-minded redneck types. You should know that Texas was a progressive state until the Rove machine started smearing Democrats and stealing elections. That and the brain-dead baptists (and not ALL baptists are brain-dead by the way)have taken control of the state just like this gang did all over the country with the lying fear-based talk-radio hosts, and lying fear-based preachers.

Texas has grown a lot of progressive heroes, including Willie Nelson, Molly Ivins, Jim Hightower, Bill Moyers, John Henry Faulk, Walter Cronkite, the great Bill Hicks -- and musicians and entertainers like Janis Joplin (and Chet Helms), Steve Miller, Alvin Ailey, Boz Skaggs, Johnnie & Edgar Winter, Steve Earle, Buddy Holly, Kris Kristofferson, Jamie Foxx, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Lightnin' Hopkins, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Lead Belly, Phil Ochs, Roy Orbison, Don Henley, The Dixie Chicks, Lyle Lovett, Marcia Ball, Billy Joe Shaver, Roky Erickson and The 13th Floor Elevators -- God there's so many ... who am I leaving out? Oh yeah, Kinky Friedman.

Oh, and Woody Guthrie moved south of the Red River as a child and began his dustbowl, Depression-era songwriting in Texas where he lived until age 25.

3. Kinky...
... would be an improvement over most states' governors, and a vast improvement over ours (Texas').

I've already seen a couple of Kinky for Governor stickers. :)

5. I really enjoyed the read! Thanks for posting it! Wouldn't it be a hoot if
he actually did a repeat of the Jesse Ventura act and got elected?!

I actually really liked what he said about teachers and what he'd do to the education department! I think it would be a credit to the people of Texas if they had the insight to do it!
