Poll question: Freep women who should don burkas in support of the Iraq constitution
Edited on Sun Aug-21-05 02:18 PM by BleedingHeartPatriot
So, now it's starting to look like the Iraq (neocon fundy) constitution will not allow for or recognize women's civil rights.

Especially galling, considering that they were on equal footing with men in pre war Iraq.

So, I would like to nominate a woman from the list below to start wearing a burka in support of democratic "progress" in Iraq. She can also begin to practice the subservient edicts of Radical Islam.

There were so many that came to mind, I'm sure you can think of
others.
MKJ

Edited to add: Sorry to sound bitter, but what is happening to the women Iraq is unconsciounable.

As a woman with a teenage daughter I am outraged at these high profile women supporting this in any way, shape or form.

And, I have nothing against Islam as a religion, except when it's radicalized, as Christianity has been here, to oppress women. MKJ

That would be me. I like registering Republican because I can vote against the worst of the worst in the primaries.

I like telling 'pukes I'm registered Republican and vote straight ticket Democrat. It drives 'em crazy.

4. I voted for Coulter. She'd look better covered up anyway.
That is one mannish woman.

But they all should don a hijab or abaya.

burkas?

When I worked in a refugee clinic, I observed that many of the Muslim women wore head scarves, but I only saw one in in a burka, and dark gloves to cover her hands. MKJ

edited to add, although she spoke excellent English, I couldn't understand what she was asking through the covering...I was called to the front desk by our staff, who weren't sure what she was requesting.

Finally, I went with her to the women's restroom, after assuring her the staff would insure no one else came in while we were speaking.

Behind the door to the bathroom, she finally removed her head covering and we were able to converse.

That is what I think of as a burka. MKj

18. Here you go:

Hijab - a head covering or head scarf

Abaya - a long, tunic-like gown for modest dressing.

5. Most of those women would happily don an American version
of a burka if King Bush or their husbands dictated it. So, all of the above.

7. I don't believe any woman should be so demeaned. . .
less so simply because others are forced to submit.

8. That's admirable, but they are actively promoting the forcible submission
of other women in the world, while they enjoy the recognition, autonomy and high pay associated with that support.

Perhaps time spent "walking in someone else's shoes or restrictive clothing" would change their tune.

OK, OK, I don't really advocate the beating of women -- just a little Taliban humor.
Besides - if you accept it - don't you have to take the whole package?

12. Malkin should be gagged
and someone should revoke her access to any of the tools of publishing! Is anyone familiar with her book justifying the detention of Japanese-Americans during WWII? What a racist load of crap!

13. I went with Ann Coulter
Good idea for a poll. Although I disagree with you about Islam. The more Islam plays a role in a society, the worse off will be women and non-Muslims.

14. Sadly, think that's true for the most part. The Kurdish area of Iraq was
an exception to the rule, pre Iraq war.

However, I must say that Islam combined with poverty is the "adding gasoline to the fire" situation that creates the worst oppression..i.e. the Phillipines over the last 20-30 yrs.

15. Yeah
The Kurds are a bit more with it. They seem relatively laid back about things. I really feel bad for the Iraqi women and the Christians there.

You're right about Islam combined with poverty being a very bad combination. But I think that Islam is a large factor in causing that poverty. Sure, Western imperialism didn't help them, but there was imperialism in the Far East too - and those countries have modernized and developed very well, often times outcompeting the West.
The culture of the Far East enabled those countries to succeed, the culture of the Middle East, largely because of Islam, is stagnant and regressive. It's an unpleasant conclusion that we're going to have to accept as reality. And American imperialism isn't going to lift them out of their mess.
