Salt Lake City Mayor calls for "the biggest demonstration to greet Bush
<snip>
Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson called for "the biggest demonstration this state has ever seen" to protest President Bush's appearance Monday before a national veterans convention.
"This administration has been disastrous to the country," Anderson said Friday. "If people could organize and speak out in an effective manner from the reddest state in the country, that would garner a lot of attention."

In an e-mail Wednesday to about 10 activist leaders, the maverick mayor of Utah's capital called for a diverse demonstration to greet Bush when he speaks to the Veterans of Foreign Wars at the Salt Palace Convention Center. The mayor plans to join the protesters.

"There should be a collaboration of health-care-provision advocates, seniors, the community, anti-Patriot Act advocates and other civil libertarians, anti-war folks, pro-Social Security advocates, environmental advocates, anti-nuclear-testing advocates, and anti-nuclear-waste-shipment-and-storage advocates," the mayor wrote in the e-mail. http://www.sltrib.com/ci_2958368

Recommend and kick this one around.

1. Wow
I read that story and was amazed. What a guy, how fantastic is that, what he said "If people could organize and speak out in an effective manner from the reddest state in the country, that would garner a lot of attention"

Bless his heart.

'..."To stand up against government misconduct is in no way expressing a lack of support for those who defend our country."...'

A Governor of Montana & the Mayor of Salt Lake, a congressional candidate in Ohio - guess real democrats R coming from 'red' areas cuz they know how 2 fight 2 get their message out.

4. Wow. A MAYOR saying this?
That's pretty huge. Politicians are usually much more... obscure... than that.

6. Go Rocky Anderson!
Salt Lake City's other newspaper, the Deseret Morning News, is also mentioning the mayor's call for action:

(snip) At least one formal protest is planned during Bush's visit. Families and veterans opposed to Bush's war policies will gather at Pioneer Park at noon, and Salt Lake Mayor Rocky Anderson called on Utahns to join the protest.
Celeste Zappala of Philadelphia, whose son was killed in action in Baghdad in 2004, will speak, along with local members of Military Families Speak Out and Veterans for Peace. Zappala is a co-founder, with Cindy Sheehan, of Gold Star Mothers for Peace, and has joined Sheehan at her vigil outside the Bush ranch in Crawford, Texas.
(snip)
Anderson also has called for a "major demonstration" today by Utahns who oppose the president's environmental and war policies.
Anderson's plea went out in an e-mail to fellow Democrats, environmentalists and a few of his top administrative staff.

Utah may be a thoroughly Red state, but a good many Salt Lake City residents march to a different drummer. Look at their mayor.
