Morning Edition, August 22, 2005 · Former NATO commander Wesley Clark argues the case for sending NATO troops into Darfur to protect civilians and humanitarian operations. Clark is currently a board member of the International Crisis Group.

They should be taking over in Afghanistan and Iraq, too. Why is it that the U.S. is still the primary caretaker for both new democracies?

1. NATO
is in Afghanistan, but no one is interested in Iraq.

I don't even know why they're in Afghanistan.

3. Afghanistan
means a few blocks in Kabul the new 'president' doesn't venture out of.

Afghanistan is under constant Taliban attack elsewhere.
