Photos of today's Bush protest in Salt Lake City (warning LOTS of photos!)
Edited on Mon Aug-22-05 03:44 PM by Sean Reynolds
You were warned...there are a lot of photos!

My mom and I went down to the protest and there was an amazingly large crowd (500-1,000). It was great. Mayor (Salt Lake City) Rocky Anderson spoke, as did the mother of a kid who died over in Iraq.

I haven't seen many stories on the protest...so I'll just let you know...ONE DID HAPPEN! Here are my photos. :)

So here they are...

Mayor Anderson!

That's all!

Signed, a proud Salt Laker! :)

96. We used that same sign in anti-war rallies in 1969. Cool!
In fact, a bunch of us (all women) standing under that sign are in a picture in the college yearbook.

Never looked better than it did today.

Very proud of everyone who rallied!

illuminating..I'm so glad I clicked on cause I thought the mayor was the guy with the beard in Sean's pics.

Rocky's quite a guy..almost too good to be true when you've followed this thing from 2000 on!

I'm glad * wasn't in the Delta Center. I couldn't stand it if he walked in that building. He'd defile the place and it would have to be cleansed.

on edit: OH SHIT! Is that Freedom Park? Are you on 300 West, which will now be known forever as JOHN STOCKTON DRIVE? I just got even more choked up than I was before.

I too would not want Bush to step foot in the Delta Center. It's bad enough he's only a hop-skip away!

Loved the cross section of America (though I didn't see many minorities.) But lots of old/young people.

I especially loved the poster that said "Fighting for Peace is like screwing for Virginity"

and the little boy's tshirt that said "War starts with Dubya!"

signs. I bet there were 1,000 or so people there. All ages too.

Only regret: I wish people with other agendas didn't bring their signs to an event like this. This is an anti-war event, not an abortions rights, etc protest. I think a protest looks disorganized if there are all of these messages there. And some people there might be anti-choice and not want to be affiliated with pro-choice people, so they are less likely to go.

PS: Can I have some of these pics? I want to show some to another message board I visit.

For our friends lurking here from other sites, I suggest you study the pictures in the original post carefully. That's what patriotic citizens look like. They love their country, and hate what your president has done to it.

Please take my comments for the :sarcasm: they intended.

But seriously, if you listened to the "looney right" the only people that protest are "dope-smoking, long-haired, communists, socialist terrorist sympathizing Sodomites".

These people look pretty damn normal to me! Nothing but average Americans that have had enough.

87. How do you know it "went for Bush over 70%"?
The election was completely non-transparent and unverifiable, with two rightwing Bushite electronic voting machine companies, owned by two brothers, tabulating all the votes with SECRET, PROPRIETARY programming code.

That's why I don't buy any of the "red state"/"blue state" B.S. I DON'T KNOW how Utah voted--or any other state--and will not make judgments of any state until we have honest vote counts again.

Thanks for the photos. It is good to see that most of the signs were hand made. I like the Heil Bush with the GOP elephant. Real brave of the mayor to make a speech at the protest. I'm sure the right wingers will be attacking him. Just came across an AP article. Mentions his speech, Cindy's camp, references to 9/11 - here we go again- , and the protesters. http://apnews1.iwon.com//article/20050822/D8C54O580.html?PG=home&SEC=news

Sean, please extend my appreciation to your mom for the photos. I also just wanted to stop by and tell you that you have consistently been one of the best posters here at the DU and I always look forward to reading what you write here.

I'm thrilled that such a rally happened there in Salt Lake proving what you've been saying for a long, long time. That dissent against this administration is universal and that we all need to take a new and more relevant picture of Utah.

95. Wow! And DOUBLE WOW! Fab protest! Fab pix! Thanks so much!
My favorite sign, above, is "Why?" I want to see that everywhere. I want to hear 2 million people crying out and chanting, "Why?" in Washington DC, and "Why?" echoing around OUR capitol, and around OUR country.

Why? Why? Why? Why? Why?.....over and over and over.

------

And what's all this dissing of "aging hippies"? Hippies are good. They led the revolution against the Vietnam war, and brought a NEW THOUGHT into American life: "Love, love, love!" Can't have that and predatory capitalism and hogfeasting miltary contractors, so they got reviled and stereotyped and dissed all over the place by the war profiteering, corporate news monopolies.

Be generous. Be peaceful. Be natural. Enjoy life. Make good music. There is plenty for everybody. Stop being so uptight and selfish and greedy. Make love not war!

Good ideas! Wonderful new ideas of what human life could be like!

Are we going to let the fascists define what democracy looks like? They'll dis whatever we do. They did it then, they're doing it now. Don't pander to them. Don't even think about them. They lie, lie, lie and lie some more. Be yourself, whoever you are. I'm all for all kinds of folks creating a peace movement. I love all different kinds of people, in every walk of life! Even freepers and dittoheads (the poor, pathetic, empty-souled fools)! I LOVE IT that this demo was so "middle-American" looking. Don't get me wrong. I understand P.R. as well as the next person (and also the broad-based desire for peace). But I go way back, and remember the thousands and thousands of straight people (me among them), back in 1967, marching against the war, and now...how does all that get characterized? As "hippies" and "weathermen" (bomb-makers) and "leftists"! It was an across-the-board REVOLUTION, in which Hippies were just the most colorful element--and the scary philosophers of "love thy neighbor as thyself" (scary to the war mongers). But somehow "hippies" and drugs and "weathermen" and "leftists" get to be the story, and the 99% of OTHER KINDS OF PEOPLE who marched against the war got blackholed then, and get blackholed now. Same old crap.

What is it? You want to assure the fascists and the warmongers that you DON'T REALLY MEAN PEACE, that you DON'T MEAN TO SHAKE THEM UP, that you DON'T REALLY BELIEVE THERE IS SOMETHING *FUNDAMENTALLY* WRONG when 58% of Americans opposed this war way back BEFORE the invasion, in Feb. '03, and we HAD WAR ANYWAY?

Is that what "aging hippies" means to them--and to those here who applaud "no tie-dyes," "straight crowd"? We're not going to threaten them in any way, not going to take their war toys away, not going to demand justice and equity?

Well, maybe they NEED some "aging Hippies" in their face! Love, love, love, assholes!

(LOL!)

124. The original cry for protest from the mayor was that everyone who
who had a problem with the crazy policies of GW should be at his anti-Bush rally. He named several groups that should be there, his intention (if I'm remembering the article correctly) was that it would be a protest of all Bush has done wrong. The article was maybe 2 days ago. (I would almost put it as a call for impeachment rally).

Sean - as a former resident of the great city of Salt Lake, I am proud of you guys. Utah may be a "red" state (purple like the rest really), but it has a strong blue streak. I always sensed a strong counter culture to the dominant culture there.

Unemployment rages in North Central Idaho, and we have Walking Tall type Tennessee sheriffs here. When the '04 election happened, I didn't meet a single person who was voting for Bush, yet he won by a gigantic margin here.

Salt Lake has good reason to be proud. Too bad Mormon dominated Southern Idaho won't be the same. Please don't forget not to buy gasoline on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays to stop buying the product that supports this administration and this war.

These were mostly people who were previously indifferent to W's shenanigans, or not able to follow all of the details of the excuses for war. They are very appreciative of the protest effort and Salt Lake City and wish they could have gone. They loved the signs, especially "fighting for peace is like screwing for virginity."

Salt Lake City "showed em"....what he is in for. This day has great significance because it was a "test the waters" day for Public Opinion and I do believe that George chose Salt Lake City as a "friendly environment".....well Salt Lake City won't be used for Propaganda...To think that he chose a VETS convention as a propaganda tool is irony heaped upon irony.....I listened very intently to the applause from the Vets ...it was scant, I thought.
I am so happy that schools and colleges around the country are out of session ....so America can see that it is an "aged" population that is saying "NO" "NO" "NO".......

On KSL tv Orrin Hatch called all the protesters "nutcakes". I guess if you don't agree with Hatch he starts name calling.

I post on another board and Cindy is getting a real bashing. This is what someone posted. Can anyone fill me in on the facts about this so I can post back a correct response.
Thank you!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Have you people not seen the rally she was speaking at for a lady who funds terrorist.....Cindy said that we have been murdering and killing people since we stepped on this continent and then she called I guess people who don't agree with her) F------- hypocrits....Yes she said it right on TV.....She is probably staying with Michael Moore as we speak.....I think the lady is a nut case....she was smiling the whole time she is calling us Americans killers....And don't say if you haven't walked in her shoes.....At 21 I lost my Dad to a heart attack(he was a retired Lt. Col and proud of it!!!!)....Three years later my Mom was killed by a drunk driver and then that next year...I had my appendixs burst while 6 months pregnant( I had my son and he lived 4 1/2 months in the hospital and we had him at home for 4 1/2 months before he died....I don't usually tell anyone but I am sick of hearing about this mother....I feel bad for her but that does not give her the right to call Americans who don't believe the way she does F------ hypocrits and call me a killer.....Her son signed up for the right to fight just as my Dad had enlisted...It's time for her to go home.....Kathy

150. Here's what you can tell "Kathy"
Cindy does not fund terrorists.
George Bush did not arrange for her father to have a heart attack.
George Bush did not arrange for her mother to be killed by a car.
George Bush did not arrange for her "appendix" to burst.
George Bush did not cause her son to die at 9 months old.

154. okay . . .
What is the thing about speaking at a rally that funds terrorists? We don't have TV (on purpose) so I am somewhat out of the loop on things like that. Anyone know what she is talking about?

152. Here's the thing Kathy..
What happened to you was very unfortunate. It's tragic in it's own right. But it's got NOTHING to do with Cindy. You cannot be comparing the casualty of an avoidable war to a tragic accident. Realize that. And don't act like you know her, and you know how she feels or what she thinks.

155. FOX 13 did a slanted slime job on their evening news about the protest
They had Orrin Hatch (fascist nazi whackjob senator from Utah) whining about the protesters and calling us fringe nutcases and unpatriotic, and bragging about how he was sucking up to * on Air Force One. Disgusting.

BTW, watch the movie "OutFoxed" to see how slanted FOX news is. Pure GOP propaganda. Rupert Murdoch is killing democracy.

KSL was the only channel to show a wide shot of the protesters, showing the actual number to be much greater (thousands) than the ~700 reported.

159. Yea, FOX sucked.
And I actually feel they're decent, but not the other day. KSL had some great numbers, KUTV was blah and I'm boycotting KTVX.
