Edwards effort to raise awareness of poor lauded
I thought folks might be interested in this item from last Sunday's edition of Foster's Sunday Citizen, the daily newspaper in Dover, NH.:

Letter to the Editor

Edwards effort to raise awareness of poor lauded

To the editor:

Sunday's editorial is a striking example of the type of snide cynicism that has become all too common in our political system.

Sen. John Edwards is to be commended for his efforts to ensure that the fight against poverty is a national priority. By discussing the need to help the working poor and near-poor accumulate assets, he shows a grasp of this issue that transcends the old, stale left versus right debate.

While the members of Foster's editorial board may be blissfully unaware of those entangled in the poverty net, I am glad to see that someone of Sen. Edward's stature has decided to put the issue front and center.

Instead of making snarky assertions about Sen. Edward's motives, Foster's should offer a constructive alternative. That's the way to advance the debate and go about the business of improving the lives of thousands of New Hampshire families.

Rep. Peter M. Sullivan

Manchester

2. Its funny -- a helping hand to the rich is ok, to the poor is criticized
This is one of the real differences between Dems and Repubs.

Repubs think the poor should pull themselves up by their bootstraps without any help from the government -- even though many of them came from lives of privilege, inherited wealth, etc.

Dems think the poor need a helping hand to make ends meet. The poor have surely not benefited from the greatest surge in corporate profits in the last 10 years, but corporations and the wealthy have made out like bandits.

Edwards should be applauded from taking the issue to the front lines. Granted he will get little sympathy from rich fat cat Repubs, but it does not change the fact that as a country it is our moral obligation to help the less fortunate.

It is a moral outrage that the super richest 1% who own multiple homes and expensive cars are getting massive tax cuts at the same time that 1/4 of the country has not medical health insurance, and is receiving no substantial tax cut at all.

3. I applaud Edwards. Am listenting to Joan Baez from Crawford
right now and one of my favortie songs of hers is "There But For Fortune, Go You Or I" and I have always believed that to be true. Any one of us could lose everything we have tomorrow, so the next time you see a homeless person, say to yourself "there but for fortune....."
