Washington, DC - Today, the Democratic National Committee officially submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, signed by more than 80,000 Americans, to the Bush Justice Department for documents pertaining to Supreme Court nominee John Roberts' time as a high-level appointee in the office of the Solicitor General during the First Bush Administration.

"The Republicans are lining up lockstep to support Judge Roberts before they know anything about him, and I give the Democrats credit because they're asking important questions before we take a position. That's their responsibility under the Constitution, and Democrats are going to live up to that.

There are a lot of questions about Judge Roberts and the White House has been less than candid about his record. They failed to mention that he was a member of the far right Federalist Society. They failed to mention the lobbying work he did on behalf of industry groups. Now, they're slow to release documents from the Reagan Administration that could shed a little light on his record. This is a man who may be on the court for 30 years, if they are worried about what is in there, they ought to share those worries with the American people.

President Bush ought to provide prompt and truthful information when Congress requires it when it is needed to fulfill Congress' responsibilities. The American people have the right to know: Will Judge Roberts be an advocate for the basic rights and freedoms of every American, or will he be an activist for an extreme ideology? That's the question Democrats and the American people want answered through the confirmation process, and that's why we have to have these documents."
