Funny how they managed to find $100 million to train "replacement" mechanics; now they are asking for $176 million in concessions from the union. Why don't they make all those greedy corporate executive take a pay cut. Fuckers.

Most people will have purchased their tickets already and will not
be able to get refunds if the plane actually flies.

Northwest then gets to keep your money and resell the seat.

8. This shows just how bad things are in the airline industry

Years ago the mechanic's union going on strike would shut down any airline. Now there are so many out of work airplane mechanics that is relatively easy to find replacement workers who are willing to cross the picket lines and keep the planes flying.

If my mom or dad ever found out I walked across a picket line, they'd have a heart attack.

My mom worked as a general office worker at Westinghouse when she was young. She was sexually harassed by a manager, and the union stood behind her, helped to get the guy 'transfered' to the mail room (which at that time, was the career 'kiss of death'). Mind you, this was in the early 60's!

My dad worked as a warehouseman and I remember him being on strike in the 70's. The union was trying to make sure the union employees kept their health insurance. We were poor but we always had health insurance, thanks to the union...

I grew up in Pittsburgh, and if most people knew the history of unions, they'd understand why so many people belong to them. I remember my dad saying that unions were just an extension of the Democratic party; it was 'the little people's PAC'!

Unions have helped to create: child labor laws, the 8 hr work day/40 hr work week, and collective bargaining for health care and other benefits, just to name a few.

Support Labor Unions! :)

You are absolutely right about most people not knowing any Labor history - that workers fought, starved, and died for the "rights" they take for granted in the workplace.

In my own childhood, in the '50's, I remember Strikes that were devastating - I remember my mother literally bursting into tears when two Aunts whose income did not come directly from the Mills brought over a box of groceries - she had literally not known where our next meal was coming from. But there was never ANY question that we as a family had to endure whatever it took.

lived through, too, including the strikes that were broken up violently, and the times the police actually stood beside the union workers against the Pinkertons!

I'm amazed at the bravery of the early organizers. The Pinkertons beat the living snot out of union people... a lot of people died so that we could have even stuff as simple as an 8 hr work day! I hope it doesn't ever have to come to that again... :(

It was either that or go without food and cash (the closest ATM I dont have to pay to use is conveniently located in one of the supermarkets that went on strike).

I mainly shopped at Costco though during most of the Supermarket strike. I still do.

21. I kind of did the first two months of the strike.

There are three stores around my area (a Vons, an Albertsons, and a Pavilions) and all three simultaneously went on strike. And they were absolutely RUTHLESS. To the point where they were literally scaring away customers. After the first two-three months, people just stopped caring.

actually the only reason I can think of is you work for the company being picketed and you will be fired if you don't; in those instances, I will bend on the rule. Getting yourself fired won't help you or the people who are picketing.

29. I think even the picketers would have helped you cross the line

under those circumstances. All the times I have picketed, and it's been a couple, the people on the lines have been respective of others and understood that some people have to cross their lines. We really had some good times on the lines, but were financially prepared for it, which is the secret to winning.

Of course, they were not picketing the emergency room per se.

My uncle was a leader of the Safeway drivers in n. Cali, and my dad a shop steward with AFSCME.

I would never dishonor those wonderful men by crossing--in fact, my dad stood outside while I was admitted as an inpatient to hear their grievances.

(diabetic ketoacidosis while pregnant, fwiw; my son is a strapping healthy 8 year old progressive now!)
