Ask yourself why Robertson spoke out --and why now.
If Rove still knows his stuff, he's looking far and wide for something to feed the media and take attention off his boss. They've tried smearing Cindy Sheehan, and it hasn't worked. The next tactic is diversion. It's attack, distract, deny, right?

So call up old Pat and ask him to make an outrageous statement and throw some red meat to the media. Should be good for a news cycle or two. Won't do any harm--Pat isn't in any danger of losing anything over this. He's just an old fool good for a couple of yuks.

I don't think we are in any danger of seeing the Sheehan story sidelined. It's too good for the press right now, given that it's August and there isn't much else to cover. And people are responding to it, which encourages more coverage.

Too bad for Karl--he has finally met his Waterloo.

1. Not likely...
It takes extra tinfoil to see some clever plot in all this. Robertson is just being his usual batshit-insane self. Of course, I could be wrong...

7. Rove can do one of these in his sleep, by now
It is almost a knee-jerk reaction with these guys. Deny, attack, distract.

10. Actually, there may be truth to this.
Robertson actually says batshit stuff all the time.

But if a tree says batshit stuff in a forest, but no one's listening,
what difference does it make?

So all that has to happen is that recognizes that he needs a new
diversion so, knowning Robertson's track record, Rove finds
Robertson's latest bit of batshit vocalizing, and starts feeding
it through the vast Right Wing Noise Machine's blast fax chain,
and voila!, instant distraction!

5. oh it was very much planned
and I believe part of the reason is to plant the thought in the public consciousness. We all KNOW that the BFEE wants to off Chavez. Ayatollah Robertson's role is to introduce the notion and if/when the jackals do the deed, it wont come as such a shock. Evil to the core.

6. I think it's highly likely
that Robertson has been "kept in the loop" by Rove. Manipulating and exploiting the Fundies is one of Rove's top specialties, after all.

So, Robertson has likely had conversations with either Rove or his staff about the next big push to steal yet another big pool of oil - this time out from under the poor people of Venezuela. (We Duers know the push has been going on against Chavez from Day One of the BushCo admin, but it is not general knowledge among the inattentive populace).

Ayatollah Robertson was probably clued in to be ready to flak for toppling Chavez, but being the loose cannon he has always been, he instead blew the plan by speaking out prematurely before FAUX, CNN and the networks had been adequately stupefied by a Rove et al controlled build up of anti-Chavez propaganda.

The premature firing of his cannon has derailed the plan - I hope.

8. I still don't think these guys are that good.
Sure, the IWR and Patriot Act were masterpieces of political timing and leverage, but Rove is a one-note scandal monger. These guys aren't the greatest and most elaborately coordinated puppetmasters in the history of the world. Maybe he DID do this, but I think it's more likely that Robertson was just having another of his many psychotic episodes.

11. If it was Rove, it was stupid. Only called attention to why folks need no
listen to wacko Bush supporters who are in many ways worse than the enemy we are fighting.

12. This Assassination crap started with Bush.
Someone also might want to leaf through Bush's executive orders. I think he may have already over turned the Ford Policy. I mean really what is wrong with this picture. Bush saying, Assassination, I don't need that much power. That's below the belt and I'm not going there. Uh huh

13. I was just thinking about the distraction angle myself
Pat Robertson says something outrageous (that his base supports)...

Right after Rush Limbaugh says something outrageous (that his base supports)...

Seems there was another one, but I'd have to look back to find it.

And the anti-war Lord-help-us-the-sixties-are-back coverage.

Seems that they're working on distraction and - in the GOPer twofer - they are also mobilizing their base. They are getting these idiots to forget accountability and blame the liberals... or go way back and blame the commies.
