8. THAT was a huge disappointment, but he had nice hair.
Daring the media to catch him sporting with the ladies and report it was stupid.

A guy with that sort of ego didn't deserve to be president.

I accept that people can learn and grow from their mistakes, but I admit to being mighty skeptical.

34. Hart knows MSM is guilty. They were complicit in ignoring the HartRudman
Report on Global Terror to cover up for Bush's incompetence.

No sane person could have concluded that Bush was strong on terror if they knew how he refused to read the HartRudman Report that was handed to him on Jan 30, 2001.

I believe it began before McGovern. That was a media fright. But the REAL fear, I believe, comes from the big one. John Kennedy. Assasination. Who wouldn't quake in their boots. And we still don't know if that was a Bush family episode that facilitated his killing. Am I all full of it? Maybe I'm mixing apples and oranges.

McGovern won Mass. I want to feel like I did that night, thinking about how cool those people on the east coast were.

It's time for bravery. We can all agree that's what made this a great country.

Edit- OMG, I read the article, but was thinking McGovern. But you know, it isn't a whole lot different. Yes, I remember Monkey Business sailing away into the journalistic sunset.

been listening to Wes Clark.

I get so fucking mad at the Congressional Democrats Club who apparently never listens to a fucking person outside of their little crowd.

While I agree with what Hart says, it's been said before - by Wes Clark!

24. BUT, I'll try to make you see the light.
The first two quotes are before 9/11 when most people hoped BushCo. wouldn't ruin the country. Clark was a paid speaker - he spoke at Democrat and Republican fundraisers about national security. I think it's relevant that our leaders talk to both sides and Clark was non-partisan most of his life. He was a registered Independent until 2002.

The third and fourth quotes refer only to the already-taken military action in Iraq, praising the military for doing their jobs. The decision to go into Iraq had already been made and acted upon, despite Clark's warnings in Sept. 2002 that Iraq would be a quagmire. The rest of the article that this quote is from goes on to SLAM the Bush Administration for not having a follow-up plan and exit strategy.

The fifth quote is wrong. Never trust the corporate media. Clark TESTIFIED BEFORE CONGRESS that the war was unnecessary. What he WOULD support is giving the president leverage with the UN to find and destroy any weapons of mass destruction. That wasn't done. Congress eventually gave the president the power to go to war, which Clark would not have done. You don't know much about the Congressional resolution, do you?

Finally, the last quote was a fucking joke. Get a sense of humor.

29. I'm not mad - I just get tired of the ultra left-wing sites that
sound like ultra right-wing sites in their criticisms of Clark. It must be that knee-jerk on the ultra-left that hasn't accepted any military man since Vietnam. But Clark is a liberal.

If you really want to read more, here are some links:

http://securingamerica.com/issues/iraqplan
SNIP: End the American monopoly. From the beginning, the Administration has insisted on exclusive control of the Iraqi reconstruction and occupation. This has cost us the financial and military support of other nations and made America a bigger target for terrorists. Ending the American monopoly will change the way this enterprise is viewed -- in Iraq and throughout the world.

http://securingamerica.com/issues/bushrecord
SNIP: Failure to maintain adequate international intelligence sharing and law enforcement relationships. The Bush Administration's unilateral approach to national security issues has alienated key sources of international support for the fight against terrorism. Specifically, the Bush Administration's bullying approach has inhibited efforts to develop accurate intelligence regarding terrorist activities and bring terrorists to justice. For example, it is reported that Syria provided extensive information to the CIA and the FBI regarding Al Qaeda operations and personnel prior to the war in Iraq. During the Bush Administration's unilateral march to war, this flow of valuable intelligence dried up.

http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/features/2004/0405.clark.html
SNIP: President Bush's approach to Iraq and to the Middle East in general has been greatly influenced by a group of foreign-policy thinkers whose defining experience was as hawkish advisors to President Reagan and the first President Bush, and who in the last few years have made an explicit comparison between Middle Eastern regimes and the Soviet Union. These neoconservatives looked at the nest of problems caused by Middle East tyranny and argued that a morally unequivocal stance and tough military action could topple those regimes and transform the region as surely as they believed that Reagan's aggressive rhetoric and military posture brought down the Soviet Union.

http://www.mtholyoke.edu/acad/intrel/bush/virtual.htm
SNIP: Our difficulties in Iraq are not just evidence of careless planning for the postwar--though they are that. More fundamentally, they call into question the whole theory that America is capable of--or that it is in our interest to create--an empire founded on force of arms. The American military has never been and probably cannot be made into an imperial force along neo-Roman lines. This is not to say that America lacks sufficient power to defend its interests in the world, including spreading values such as democracy and free-market economics. We've had that power for decades, and wielded it successfully. But while a powerful military has been vital, the chief means of our influence has been an interlocking web of international institutions and arrangements, from NATO to the World Bank to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. This network of mutual interdependence, though marginalized by the Bush administration, was largely devised by America, which has also been its chief beneficiary. It is, for all practical purposes, a kind of empire--but to use a contemporary term, a virtual one. Properly used and expanded, it can be the secret to a secure and prosperous future.

17. here's another great article by Gary Hart

source: http://www.commondreams.org/views05/0815-28.htm

If democracy only works when there is open discussion of opposing ideas and policies, and if the opposition party, in this case the Democrats, has hand-cuffed, blind-folded, gagged, and hog-tied itself to a failed invasion and occupation in the Middle East, where will the expanding majority of Americans look for a representative, a spokesperson, a voice for their anger, frustration, and distrust at being misled?

The circumstances suggest it should be a Senate or House Democratic leader, a recognized authority on foreign policy constantly seen on the Sunday talk shows, certainly one of the many “leaders” lining up to seek the Democratic Party’s nomination for president in 2008.

Strangely, no one in any of those categories comes to mind. Their voices are silent. Thus, both they and the party they claim or presume to represent look dumbstruck, awkward, pitiful, and timid. Where the single greatest issue of the day, and one of the most potent issues of our time, is concerned, there is no courageous opposition.

Meanwhile, the caskets keep coming home…with no public official to greet them or to respect them. They are the forgotten dead and they represent thousands more of the even more forgotten wounded.

That's why they had to take him down. Did anybody else ever find it strange that Donna Rice suddenly became a right wing anti-porn crusader? Makes me wonder if she wasn't playing for that team all along.

Hart's probably a little old to be running now, but we could do worse. And considering some of the names being shoved down our throats, just might.

20. The article is wonderful!
And spot on!!

snip...

To stay silent during such a crisis, and particularly to harbor the thought that the administration's misfortune is the Democrats' fortune, is cowardly. In 2008 I want a leader who is willing now to say: "I made a mistake, and for my mistake I am going to Iraq and accompanying the next planeload of flag-draped coffins back to Dover Air Force Base. And I am going to ask forgiveness for my mistake from every parent who will talk to me."

just read Hart's piece in the WP ... he wrote with passion, power and principles ...

too many others are little more than mealy-mouthed, nuanced, poll-taking opportunists who preach toughness but mirror timidity ...

learn from Mr. Hart, Democrats ... bold ideas, conveyed with passion, demonstrating the courage of our convictions to fight for our beliefs ... stop worrying about the Red states and stop worrying about being labeled by those who will label you no matter what you do and stop worrying about how it will play to the center ... Americans are looking for LEADERS; not political technocrats ...

bravo, Mr. Hart !!!

Yeah, let them say this to a man that warned the nation about terrorist acts years before 9/11.

I really think he should run again. I think people are over some affair that happened 20 years ago.
