1. It's always the ones who have never seen real war, that are the most
anxious for other people to die on foreign soil in hostile lands....

This fact drives me absolutely insane.

2. Even back then they knew about chickenhawks
William Tecumseh Sherman noted, "It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry for blood, more vengeance. More desolation."

3. Yep. The VFW requires a campaign ribbon. The Legion does not.
All the members of the VFW have served overseas and earned a campaign ribbon. The American Legion merely requires active service. The American Legion is more political and right-wing.

14. Yup. Both Gore and Kerry could join VFW, but Smirk couldn't.
I'm not even sure Smirk could join the American Legion. Probably. I think even Boy Scouts are eligible.

21. Not quite, the Legion requires service during a foriegn campaign...
But not service in the campaign. Which, as a submariner cold-warrior I don't qualify, I served in the gap between Vietnam and Grenada. My routine would not have changed one iota had we gone to conventional war.

Life member AMVETS.

Highest ribbon is good conduct, followed by sea-service, but all I need is a chip and a chair, right?

22. Correct. Using Viet Nam jargon, the Legion are the real REMFs.
I often call myself a REMF ... assigned to USARV HQ at Long Binh for my tour in 1969. The actual REMFs, however, were the folks who didn't qualify for campaign ribbons during the time they were awarded. (I would have rather been a true REMF, I think ... but I don't know who I'd be today if that were so.)

It's strange. In the last 60 years, there've apparently been fewer years during which campaign ribbons haven't been awarded than years in which they were. I wonder whether this was foreseen when the Legion and VFW were formed. I get the definite impression such times were thought to be quite a bit rarer than they've been.

26. My dad got into the Legion a few years ago.
He was full-time Navy Reserve for 6 years. Part of that time during Korea.

A few years back the Legion relaxed their standards due to declining membership and let him in.

9. My email, I should have waited, to craft a better one, I am pissed!
I am a Navy Veteran, I served from 1978-88. I have a ribbon rack two and a half tiers tall. I proudly displayed my Navy Wings of Gold above them all (Navy Aircrewman). Aside from my hard earned Navy Aircrewman Wings, the Naval Expeditionary Forces Medal that I was awarded for support of the Marines in Beirut (83) is among my most cherished decorations. I fully understand firsthand the hard earned freedoms of our great country. I was very willing to be put myself into harms way and was prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice defending those freedoms.

I was taken by surprise when I read an article in Editor and Publisher regarding the Legions stance on anti-war protestors. I was speechless, and still do not know exactly what to say or how to convey my emotions and feelings on this subject. First and foremost, when I was on active duty, I was expected to keep a neutral stance on politics. I can not believe that the American Legion would take such an obviously biased view on such a political hot potato. You do not represent this combat veterans views, if you wanted to help with troop morale, why not lobby for more funding for the VA.

I am sure that our young troops that are in need of medical attention and having long waiting lists to receive treatment would be much better served if you were to focus on funding. They need more Doctors, Nurses, better equipment and more beds. The state of our VA is in shambles and you want to focus on some anti-war protestors. I believe your attention and powerful organization could be put to better use then making threats to AMERICAN citizens, because that’s the way it reads.

What’s even worse is that you think you have some idea of what war is like; you have no more knowledge of war than that of our President and Vice President. If you had ever spent anytime in a war zone being shot at, maybe you might have a different opinion, if you had been wounded you would know just what our troops really need.

12. My message to Cadmus.
Mr. Cadmus, I find it most interesting that you felt protests during the Vietnam War were demoralizing. Things must have been unbearable in Germany. I was in the field in Vietnam walking point and I was proud to hear that Americans were exercising the rights that I fought for. This is an unnecessary war in Iraq And as much as I support our wonderful troops, I refuse to support this chickenhawk administration and it's immoral policies.

My grandfather was in Africa--yes, Africa--during World War II, fighting the Afrika Korps. My uncle was killed at Pearl Harbor on the deck of the Arizona. Hell, my mother's whole family (except for her brother) served in Vietnam. And this scumpile CHICKENHAWK is the Legion Commander?

17. Cadmus on the ACLU -
"The latest outrage from the "America-does-nothing-right" crowd is a series of lawsuits against Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez, Brig. Gen. Janis Karpinski and Col. Thomas Pappas. The March 1 news release in which the ACLU announced the lawsuits would be laughable if not for the serious impact it is already having on military operations."

19. My mother
wound up joining the Am Leg. as a social issue, and wound up as V Pres. she is admittedly a non-combatant (physician), and was never deployed oversees. She emailed me that she quit over this decision. I imagine my brother will too, he's eligible for the VFW (MEU Kosovo), but I don't know if he'll join.
