Like many others here, yesterday I resigned my membership in the American Legion. I provided them the following explanation addressed to the National Commander, who was the small minded individual who damned us anti war protesters as "unpatriotic".
Sir:
Please cancel my membership immediately. While I enjoy the fellowship and camaraderie provided by the Legion, I can no longer tolerate the continuing effort to silence those of us who dare disagree with the President and the Commander of the Legion.
I had thought that I fought and served so the American people could enjoy their right to dissent, not to quash any expression of thought with which I, or some higher authority, did not agree. I strongly support the ACLU, the Anti-war movement, Ms Sheehan, and many other causes which I am sure you also dislike and condemn.
To me the Legion has abandoned the American ideal and therefore I am compelled resign my membership. May you reconsider your ill conceived stance on patriotic dissent and realize that the exercise of one's rights as a citizen is anything but un-American.
Respectfully, Allen Brooks, STGC (SW) USN, HD
I was quite proud of myself, I was actually civil, which is no small feat for an old Navy Chief!
