My letter to the American Legion
Edited on Sat Aug-27-05 03:45 AM by oxbow
The latest AP-IPSOS poll found that "An overwhelming number of people say critics of the Iraq war should be free to voice their objections - a rare example of widespread agreement about a conflict that has divided the nation along partisan lines.

Nearly three weeks after a grieving California mother named Cindy Sheehan started her anti-war protest near President Bush's Texas ranch, nine of 10 people surveyed in an AP-Ipsos poll say it's OK for war opponents to publicly share their concerns about the conflict."

Given this widespread support, and our heritage of patriotism through dissent, I found it very surprising that the AL is vowing to stop these antiwar protests through "whatever means necessary."

It's a sad day when an American institution like the AL threatens their own fellow Americans for exercising their constitutional rights. And it seems like the public is rejecting this madness that you've voted for as well.

1. A reasonable, diplomatic letter. Though you'll never
get a diplomatic response from the AL. And, I'm not surprised at their statement. Their obsession with the flag amendment all these years, for example, demonstrates how little they care about the Constitution, and also shows that they have their priorities on petty things.

3. Yea, but I have tor try and make them listen to reason
That only 1/10 of the American public agress with what they're doing should make them realize that they're officially part of the Radical Fringe now. We can only hope that they understand how outside the mainstream this idiocy is and stop it.

8. I hope along with you! Always irked me my father got their
publication (simply because he joined so he could use their bar), yet he isn't aware that their politics aren't aligned with his common sense. I always wondered if there was a liberal counterpart to the AL?

9. Veterans for Peace is one such org. They've been with Cindy...
...ever since she dropped by Arlington West on Mother's Day last year, and some of them escorted her over to Crawford.

So their organization's not as big as the American Legion; at least their principles are in the right place.

2. Thanks for the link. Here's my e-mail to AL:
Concerning Resolution 169, I have no problem with your support of the so called war on terrorism. As a veteran,I am insulted by your thinly veiled threat to use 'any means necessary' against anyone who happens to disagrees. This country was founded on the right to dissent and I am astounded that the AL would threaten citizens exercizing their constitutional rights. To be blunt,Resolution 169 is a disgrace and you and your organization disgust me.

10. I'm furious with the AL Leaders statements/position......
I understand that bush was actually booed at the event.
I'd like to learn the whole truth.
I will rip my life-long membership (daughter and granddaughter of members) if the entire organization actually supports that Commander's radical speech/position.
