Malcolm Gladwell uses the virus meme to explain the spread of ideas (and just about any other social phenomenon). Is the idea of w as dolt now "common knowledge", and is this cartoon evidence thereof?

I hope so.

1. Hot and busty
Ever notice how all the women in Blondie and dagwood are hot and busty? Even, it appears, Laura Bush.

Chimpo, however, looks like a Moran.

2. I think you've misinterpreted the cartoon.
Dagwood is the doofus. He's got a call from Bush but thinks it's a prank by one of his friends so he reacts accordingly. The cartoon strongly implies getting a call from Bush would be a great honor.

3. It COULD be read that way. But it could be read the other way too.
YMMV.

5. I read it as Dagwood looking like the Doofus as well
Perhaps the cartoonist intended it to be ambiguous?

13. I agree. The obvious implication is that it would be an honor. (nt)

7. Different Reactions
Educated American: "Gimme that phone. I've got a couple of things to say to this dirty gutless bastard."

Dagwood Bumstead: "The President? For me? Wow! What an honor this is!! I've crapped my pants! Wow! Maybe he wants me to enlist you and Alexander!! Maybe he wants me to lie about Cindy Sheehan to FOX News!! Maybe he wants to pound my ass!!! Yes!!!"

Bush isn't being made fun of here. In fact, since the final panel suggests that Bush is ever allowed into the Oval Office without his handlers, or that he could dial a number on the phone without at least two people helping, the strip's making him look more competent than reality.

12. The way I read it, on the way to the phone, Dagwood is

thinking "What an honor, the president calling me" but when he gets on the phone he has a different thought and is laughing at his neighbor, (Herb) Woodley, thinking that Woodley is pulling a prank on him.

Sorry, I don't see it as Dagwood dissing Dubya, but as Dagwood being a doofus, as usual.

16. Nah, the joke's on Dagwood
The joke's on Dagwood, who figures the President couldn't possibly be calling him. Comic strip artists must be very careful about drawing real people, but the panel of George and Laura accords him the dignity due any occupant of the Oval Office. He's essentially a prop to further the "funny" aspect of the gag.

17. Sorry, it's not a dis on Bush.
The cartoonist has been having people from the "real world" and other comic strips drop into Blondie as part of the celebration of the "75?" anniversary.

The cartoonist already has said in articles marking the anniversary occasion that Bush would make a phone call to honor the occasions and that Dagwood would be "Dagwood" in responding to the call.

Sorry, but sometimes a comic strip is just a comic strip.
