New Orleans district, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Cut by Bush
In fiscal year 2006, the New Orleans district of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is bracing for a record $71.2 million reduction in federal funding.

It would be the largest single-year funding loss ever for the New Orleans district, Corps officials said.

I've been here over 30 years and I've never seen this level of reduction, said Al Naomi, project manager for the New Orleans district. I think part of the problem is it's not so much the reduction, it's the drastic reduction in one fiscal year. It's the immediacy of the reduction that I think is the hardest thing to adapt to.

There is an economic ripple effect, too. The cuts mean major hurricane and flood protection projects will not be awarded to local engineering firms. Also, a study to determine ways to protect the region from a Category 5 hurricane has been shelved for now.

1. This is the Smoking Gun -- in advance.
I realized the full impact of the * administration's negligence today. The stolen elections, the war of aggression in Iraq, and other outrages have left their mark.

But today when I realized that there is NO PLAN to evacuate a city of 500,000 and that 100,000 who "can't afford" to leave have to stay in the SuperDome, it finally struck me. We have a magnificently indifferent government.

Of course, the governors in the region could call on the National Guard or the US Military could help, but they're busy elsewhere.

Let's just hope that the SuperDome is above the flood level and that the claim that it's construction can withstand 200 mph winds is true, and I pray that it is true. If not, we're in for a tragedy that will shock us to our core.

23. You just enter your state and then copy and paste the e-mails to
an e-mail. Put one in the send to box and all the rest in bbc, which means blind copy. The people who recieve it then won't know that you have sent multiple e-mails.

10. This is the Smoking Gun that will bring BushCo down.
And it's a trifecta:

1) Army Corps of Engineers budget slashed dramatically.

2) FEMA budget drained to reward wealthy taxpayers.

3) Louisiana National Guard in Iraq, where they can't help.

I think he's fucked, personally.

that Bush hasn't done something extreme something else always pops up that amazes me. I think though if nothing is done about this and they do have horrible loses (I'm praying that doesn't happen) then Bush will be blamed and the republicans. His approval raiting will be very low. I've never known evil like this before.

But a lot of our people that fight things here are over there. But what else would you expect in that catastrophic success of a first option war of last resorts? I think Bush Bashing is going to reach new heights. I think Bush will end up taking more of a beating than New Orleans.

He absolutely pointed this out, and the sad, pathetic irony of it.

Spread it far!!! Spread it wide!!!!!!!! To EVERYONE you know, AND whatever media contacts you have. ANYBODY you know who still supports him or voted for him - NEEDS to know this. And this is just one case.

I received this in an email as well. I refrained from publishing it on DU because I could find no references in any newspaper to support it. I checked names, too, and could not find them. Admittedly, I used news.google.com.

Can someone find a supporting article which comes from a different original source???

45. Two words: Cindy Sheehan. WE need to be Cindy Sheehan.
They resolutely and repeatedly gave the anti-war movement short shrift until Cindy stepped up to be counted. She dragged singlehandedly the MSM, kicking and screaming, into paying attention to the anti-war movement, and that began to give it traction.

We literally have to become her.

They refused to cover the DSM until we made a stink - and yes, their response was a little underwhelming, but they still had to take a look at it.

We have to FORCE the issue.

And now, the momentum is WITH us, not against us.

44. Welcome to DU!
Glad you're here.

If Halliburton had had any stake in New Orleans levee project fundings, NONE of this would have happened.

Ummm... actually, I take that back. Probably would have happened anyway. The money would be allocated. It'd be in Halliburton's offshore pockets and otherwise unaccounted for. And probably nothing would actually have been done yet.
