LA National Guard Wants It's Equipment Back From Iraq (too late now)
Note: With the billions spent in Iraq you mean they had to take the State's emergency equipment!?!?

LA National Guard Wants Equipment to Come Back From Iraq
Yunji de Nies
August 1, 2005

JACKSON BARRACKS -- When members of the Louisiana National Guard left for Iraq in October, they took a lot equipment with them. Dozens of high water vehicles, humvees, refuelers and generators are now abroad, and in the event of a major natural disaster that, could be a problem.

snip...

Col. Schneider says the state has enough equipment to get by, and if Louisiana were to get hit by a major hurricane, the neighboring states of Mississippi, Alabama and Florida have all agreed to help.

snip...

Members of the Houma-based 256th Infantry will be returning in October, but it could be much longer before the rest of their equipment comes home.

"You've got combatant commanders over there who need it they say they need it, they don't want to lose what they have, and we certainly understand that it's a matter it's a matter of us educating that combatant commander, we need it back here as well," Col. Schneider said.

1. I knew we'd be seeing stuff like this.
We need our defensive strength HERE AT HOME. NOT over there where they A) don't appreciate us; B) regard us as invaders; C) where our people are getting shot at; D) where all we're doing is enabling the enemy by providing LOTS of motivation to strike against the US, its interests, and its people.

We need them BACK HERE. NOW!

2. Hey, you NEED high water vehicles in the desert
Looks like Louisiana doesn't want any of that precious, precious federal disaster money.

"Not a team player."

3. That's our George, keeping us "safer" here at home.
Not.

I was wondering about this this morning. Louisiana and Mississippi are going to need a lot help in the next few weeks. This storm is a national disaster, not just a regional one. It highlights our vulnerabilities and our interdependence on each other. The first the Republicans want discount because they are directly responsible for this damn mess that has weakened our overall security. The second, the interdependence, they think is too "socialist" and goes against the libertarian mythic ideal of "everyman" who is free to fall or stand according to his personal merits and resources.

In other words the, "Government? We don't need no stinking government", Grover Norquist dupes will begin to wonder who is going to help pay for the hurricane ruined homes and businesses and the clean up of the toxic spills the storm leaves behind. And we can just shrug.

They, and unfortunately we along with them, are left with the government they thought they wanted. Because, don't they know how to spend their own money better than the evil "big government"? Right, take your hundred dollar tax cut and replace your flooded home. FEMA's pockets aren't all that deep and the "never saw a tax cut they didn't love" billionaire Republicans need their money for yachts, homes abroad, and French couture. You know we don't want Paris Hilton going without, now do we?

4. Jeb to the rescue!?

Perhaps this is where Jeb gets press by coming to the rescue since Florida wasn't hit as hard?

6. Does Florida have the resources? Maybe Jeb will cut all social services
to the bone so he can look magnanimous. And I wonder how Florida's national guard units are faring. I bet, that if he does step in, it will be all window dressing and fanfare, nothing of real substance. But then, how would we know, the liberal media wouldn't be sharing a view of the true quality of his effort.

God, why am I so cynical? Where are our responsible adults? Why aren't they in charge? Give me patience. :grr:

7. Does anyone think this equipment will be usable again after being in Iraq?
Not from what I have read.
