Ayatollah Sistani calls for Iraq to remain united...
Edited on Mon Aug-29-05 10:39 AM by kentuck
Temporarily halting the plan for a new Constitution, it appears. He has called for the Iraqis to include the Sunnis in any new "federation". This appears to be a stab in the heart for the Bush and his latest plan. (scheme) This is big news. I seem to recall an assassination in Vietnam when something like this happened?

(on edit) I am told this has not yet been confirmed as credible

2. Mostly me who wasn't sure.
It was first reported ~15 hours ago by Xinhua as being posted to a website, which was not Sistani's official site: sistani.org.

Furthermore, I can't find any mention on the English language version of sistani.org. By tonight I'll have checked the arabic. But I'm dubious.

3. It's not like someone couldn't have posted what they wish he'd said
Just to give people a chance to think what might happen if he really did say it.

Sure, that might seem blasphemous, but I bet not everyone's above such a thing. Shiism is a competitive religious industry.

4. Happens all the time
Go to Sistani.org and look for his "Statements" in english. There are several disclaimers about statements attributed to Sistani.
