Any Concern re:3 Star General & Active Troops Leading NO Recovery?

Usually the National Guard is under the direct control of civil authorities, like the Governor of the State.

Here the 3 star General is going to direct the troops carrying out a civil function with acting authority superior to the civil authorities, the Governor.

What if the Military 3 star General decides they need to take over other civilian jobs to do the recovery. Would it not amount to a de facto coup of civil authority if the 3 star General overruled the wishes of the civil authorities?

Up to this point, there has been a law that prevented active military from acting within the country -- precisely because of the fear of promoting a military coup type of situation.

1. Right now everybody's up to their armpits in water

If the devil came up pitchfork in hand and offered to help they would take him.

First things first: Get the people in danger to safety and stop the flooding. After that there are going to be a million things to do we can worry about the general later.

2. Command situation doesn't bother me too much --

any authority he has is purely temporary and by the time an officer reaches command level he should have a good idea of the limits on his power.

What worries me is the troops. Are they troops recently back from Iraq? Coming from a high stress situation into another high stress situation could have dire consequences for any trying to deal with PTSD.

Remember, the guardsmen who shot the protesters at Kent State were just off the line from dealing with a violent truckers' strike, so they were already stressed and didn't think about their orders when they were told to fire.

3. with any other administration, I'd applaud it. with this one,

I'm wary. I have long been saying they wanted to enforce martial law countrywide, just waiting for the right excuse. Looks like the weather handed them one...

4. Ceding Civilian Authority to Military is a big deal

I have heard nor seen nothing which provides that this will be temporary in nature. What if the recovery takes years?
