Fitzgerald isn't just investigating this leak, he's going after the wider problem: systemic propagandizing from the the administration to scare the pants (Max Cleland's line) off the American people

She was, because of her slavish devotion to Israel, a tool of propaganda. She lied. She lied and distorted repeatedly. She did this at the behest of the PNAC and the administration. As an egocentric Pulitzer Prize winner, she can't admit that she's nothing more than a shill. Worse, were she to ever be questioned, she would be a dead woman. Not only would she show herself as a liar against the soul of journalism, she would expose the treasonous manipulation of the PNAC, and for the latter, she'd be killed.

Her only hope is to feign martyrdom as a hero of free speech and hope that the bully boys can force this to all go away. If not, she'll be killed.
