this is such a great opinion piece ... i hope you take the time to read the whole thing ... bush is toast and this piece captures it beautifully and makes a great tribute to American troops at the same time ...

The era of George Bush is over. The emperor has no clothes, and everyone can now see it. America is finally awakening, its head pounding and its stomach churning, from the 9/11-induced credulity binge of the last half decade. The shrillness with which the Limbaughs and the O'Reillys attack the truth-speaking mother of a deceased US serviceman is but a measure of their panicked desperation as they watch the wheels coming off the wagon in every imaginable way, and as they stand helpless to stop it. None of the old bad magic works anymore - not the lies, not the diversions, not the endless repetition of hollow slogans, and not the character assassination of White House 'enemies'. Game over.

So rest in peace, brave and noble American soldiers, so vastly the moral superiors of your political superiors. Odd as it may seem, and inadvertent as the effects may be, you have done humane and necessary work in Iraq, despite the disaster it has become and despite the complete disingenuousness of its premise. You have made the supreme sacrifice for the greatest of imaginable purposes. With each of your lives prematurely ended, you bring closer the end of the Bush presidency, and the end of manic American aggression in the world. With your sacrifice in war, you are making peace, no less than your grandfathers did at Normandy or Guam.

It is sad beyond words that it took your lives to stop this juggernaut of greed and violence, but not nearly as sad as what would now be happening had you not given them.

We humbly and gratefully thank you.

2. increasingly disappointed with Clark's response to me

i have not wanted to write about my increasingly deep frustrations with General Clark's response to me ... he really ducked the essence of my question and frankly, i didn't appreciate it ...

this piece from Common Dreams is exactly the kind of response he could have, and should have, given ... it honors the service of those who have been sent by their country into harms way; but it also recognizes the absolute corruption of those who sent them ... perhaps Clark has been too busy to take the time needed to address a post like mine in sufficient detail ... i would have preferred a "have to get back to you on that" to the response he actually made ... his failure to comment on the greed and corruption that is the evil that motivates the policy was, well, let's just call it unfortunate ...

it is NOT some kind of wild conspiracy theory to talk about the fact that super-wealthy powerful interests pull the strings for the largest puppet government in the history of the world ... our democracy has been infested with people whose only motivation is their own greed for money and power ...

American imperialism sits at the core of every single thing our government does ... i did all i could to raise that in my post and cite GREED as the reason we are in Iraq ... if Clark, or any of our other "leaders" fails to get behind this theme, they are fighting for something other than the truth ... nothing is more important ...

we are either going to fight against the greedy infestors or we are not ... electoral politics, absent a populace that knows the truth, is a mandate for nothing but more of the same regardless of Party and regardless of candidate ... elected candidates are toothless tigers if they win on platforms void of the essential facts ...

we need leaders who will tell Americans the truth and help build a movement, not a campaign, to restore our democracy ...

12. many soldiers "see and know"

few of them signed up just so that they could go to Iraq and support this monumental madness ... many of them have had their "tours" extended several times whether they consented or not ...

bush's "presidency" is ending now; not at the end of his term ... and the reality is that the problem goes way beyond bush ... American imperialism transcends political parties ... and it certainly transcends just Iraq ...

i see those serving in Iraq and those who died as victims of bush's policies; not causes of them ... fighting as hard as they have and making the best fight with inadequate support from the WH lays bare the total bankruptcy of bush's claims to support the troops ... he doesn't give a damn about them ... and ultimately, his failure of strategy and unjust causes will effectively end his "presidency" long before his term is up ...
