Sen. Jon Corzine endorses Kerry

Saying he has the best chance to win the White House for Democrats, U.S. Sen. Jon S. Corzine on Tuesday endorsed Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry in the race for president.

Corzine heads the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and had previously declined to make an endorsement.

Kerry is the strongest national candidate and the one most likely to beat President Bush, Corzine said at a news conference Tuesday. "John Kerry has proven with his life that he can represent all Americans," Corzine said.

The first-term senator promised he would help Kerry raise money. The endorsement would also allow others to back Kerry financially, Corzine said.

He beat Bob Franks 51 to 48%. Franks was a GOP career politician who got his start in a Kean campaign when he was 13 years old!

Elected to the Assembly himself at 27, Franks was named state party chair by Kean in 1987. When Congressman Matthew Rinaldo announced his retirement after the 1992 primary, Franks was coronated his heir and won the Republican-leaning district in November.

I wish I could understand why the establishment is rallying behind a candidate whose flaws are so obvious and whose general election potential is so limited. I guess these people just want to end the primaries as soon as possible and to do so are willing to back a candidate who doesn't have a prayer of winning against Bush, but at least is unlikely to lose in a landslide of McGovern proportions.

I'm not saying that Clark or Edwards are sure bets against Bush. Frankly, I'd say they would at best have a 1 in 4 shot against him. But at least they have a shot. Kerry's a goner from day one.

but this time I agree with you 100%. Kerry will lead the party to defeat in the Fall, and he won't stand a chance because Kerry will not connect with Middle America, particularly when his record and his waffles become better known.

I think that Clark and Edwards will do best against Bush, and in Clark's case, I think he will beat Bush.

Kerry also leads the pack of Democratic contenders among registered voters as the candidate who would have a better chance of beating President George W. Bush if the election were held today. A Kerry-Bush match-up would have Kerry up by 49 percent to Bush's 46 percent. A Clark and Bush match-up would be a close race, with Bush at 48 percent and Clark at 47 percent. Bush would have an edge over Edwards (49% to 46%). Yet, with a plus or minus margin of error, these match-ups result in a statistical dead heat. And the President would beat Dean (50% to 45%) and Sen. Joe Lieberman (49% to 45%).

At first when Dean seemed the only likely person to gain the nomination there were so many threads questioning Dean's electability. After Kerry became the frontrunner there are all these threads questioning his electability. If Clark becomes the frontrunner next week I guarantee you there will be threads questioning his electability.
