Bush: "I don't think anyone anticipated the breach of the levees"
Edited on Thu Sep-01-05 09:45 AM by Julius Civitatus
He had the gall to say that this morning on Good Morning America. Video available here:

http://abcnews.go.com/GMA

You gotta be f*cking kidding me!

:banghead:

He is giving the same answer to his inept response to the Katrina disaster that Condi Rice gave to her inept response to 9/11:

"I don't think anyone could have predicted that these people would take an airplane and slam it into the World Trade Center"

Ari Fleishcher also echoed the same official line:

"Never did we imagine what would take place on September 11 where people use those airplanes as missiles and weapons."

Bush himself said the same freaking thing on April 18, 2004:

"Nobody in our government, at least, and I don't think the prior government, could envision flying airplanes into buildings on such a massive scale."

Same tired old line. Apparently they know nothing, and they couldn't have foreseen anything at all. This line worked for them back then, and they are recycling it now that it's clear their mismanagement has made Katrina an even worse disaster.

Well, according to Atrios and Echidne blog, there have been countless predictions of the NOLA levee breaking and flooding the city, yet the Bush administration irresponsibly CUT THE BUDGET for the levee maintenance.

http://www.tpmcafe.com/story/2005/8/30/212451/290

http://www.prospect.org/web/printfriendly-view.ww?id=10180

Bush even FIRED the guy who predicted this outcome:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=4545070&mesg_id=4545070

And then Bush himself cut the funding for the levee maintenance:

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-050831corps-story,1,2364215.story?coll=chi-news-hed&ctrack=1&cset=true

The amount of chutzpah used by these people is just too much. They lie with the upmost impunity in face of overwhelming evidence against their bullcrap. I hope the media, for once, hold their feet to the fire... but we shouldn't expect much, as usual.

I'm paraphrasing here:

"No one could have imagined that terrorists would take a plane, use it as a missile and crash it into the World Trade Center."

6. Led Zeppelin imagined it ...
... on their album Led Zeppelin IV. I can see how people might fail to understand that the song is about levees breaking, since it was given the cryptic name of "When the Levee Breaks." The local officials said they were concerned about the levee breaking since it was not built for that kind of storm.

As far as imagining Sept. 11, bin Laden could certainly imagine that happening so why couldn't the Feds?

14. Pretty sad song
If it keeps on rainin', levee's goin' to break,
When The Levee Breaks I'll have no place to stay.

Mean old levee taught me to weep and moan,
Got what it takes to make a mountain man leave his home,
Oh, well, oh, well, oh, well.

Don't it make you feel bad
When you're tryin' to find your way home,
You don't know which way to go?
If you're goin' down South
They go no work to do,
If you don't know about Chicago.

Cryin' won't help you, prayin' won't do you no good,
Now, cryin' won't help you, prayin' won't do you no good,
When the levee breaks, mama, you got to move.

All last night sat on the levee and moaned,
Thinkin' about me baby and my happy home.
Going, going to Chicago... Going to Chicago... Sorry but I can't take you...
Going down... going down now... going down....

55. You want Sad, try "Louisiana 1927" by Randy Newman
Edited on Thu Sep-01-05 10:32 AM by Up2Late
Harry Shwarer, who spends a lot of time in New Orleans, started his show Sunday with this song. Below is a RealAudio link:

"Le Show" August 28, 2005 (entire program)

<http://play.rbn.com/foo.ram?url=livecon/kcrw/g2demand/ls/ls050828le_Show.rm&start=.7&proto=rtsp>

Louisiana 1927 Lyrics
Artist: Randy Newman
Album: Good Old Boys

What has happened down here is the wind have changed
Clouds roll in from the north and it started to rain
Rained real hard and rained for a real long time
Six feet of water in the streets of Evangeline

The river rose all day
The river rose all night
Some people got lost in the flood
Some people got away alright
The river have busted through cleard down to Plaquemines
Six feet of water in the streets of Evangelne

CHORUS
Louisiana, Louisiana
They're tyrin' to wash us away
They're tryin' to wash us away
Louisiana, Louisiana
They're tryin' to wash us away
They're tryin' to wash us away

President Coolidge came down in a railroad train
With a little fat man with a note-pad in his hand
The President say, "Little fat man isn't it a shame what the river has done
To this poor crackers land."

CHORUS

28. That song was written in...the 1920s!
By Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe McCoy.

Seems like simple blues artists understood this very real possibility almost 100 years ago, but modern politicians and talking heads seem so surprised -- perhaps they need to listen to more music?

42. They wrote it because it happened
In the late twenties the Mississippi flooded, sharecroppers were forced at gunpoint to work on the levees in chain gangs, it kept on raining and the levees broke killing the sharecroppers and flooding half the state of Mississippi.

69. No! You are a lying liberal!
Just because that flood is an historic fact, does not mean it happened then, or has ever happened in the history of the world!

I mean, last year here in Richmond VA, we missed getting hit by Hurricane Gaston. We just got five hours of steady rain from the remnants; flooded sections of our city nicely, it did.

No, wait. It didn't! I mean, slow heavy rains NEVER accompany a huge tropical storm, so I should just stop saying that!

138. 1929 flood
Just had the 75th anniversary, I think. Photos might still be up at the Corps of Engineers site, but I'm not sure. It took out many many acres throughout the south. People were guarding the levees so that no one would break the ones upstream to save New Orleans and bigger cities down south. People (blacks) were forced to work to keep the levees up - many died.

133. President Bush: "I didn't get the memo!"
He sounds like a slacker at work making excuses for not having something done. Does he really think we haven't noticed the dire warnings for the last decade? The Corps of Engineers warned him and so did many others. The welfare of the American People is simply not the priority of the robber barons. They are operating to steal as much as they can before they are finally deposed. I hope this disaster makes it clear to the People what the neocon agenda is all about.

11. SOMEONE TELL THIS HUMAN TRASH TO STOP LYING!!!!
I don't think I have EVER been more angry about B*sh's lies.

Amid a devastating and heartbreaking disaster--the man still continues to make covering his tracks priority one.

I want to walk up to the man, grab him by the shirt collar and tell him to shut the fuck up.

He never stops working it. He never stops lying and protecting his own ass. People are drowning, dying and mayhem ensues all around him--and STILL--his own self preservation is tantamount.

I rarely watch television, but I've seen a couple of documentaries on NOLA and how vulnerable it is to flooding, due to the city being below sea level. Most people have heard of these dangers, and it's damn well the President's FRICKIN JOB to know basic facts about United States geography.

QUIT LYING AND GIVING SPEECHES THAT ONLY SERVE TO COVER YOUR SELFISH, GUILTY, CRIMINAL, THUG BUTT!!!!!

He cannot blame terrorists. At the same time, everyone is watching what is happening over there and make many people wonder about why the government is so disorganized. Then, unlike 9-11, we will start seeing many facts revealed in the media. F**k him, they even fired a Republican who recommended funding for the preventive measure. As a Democrat, I recommend to focus on 'global warming' than how incompetent they are. That's for Louisiana Governor and senator. ( Thank God, they are both woman.) Catastrophic deserters shake up people. 9-11 somehow change many American into the wrong direction. I am hoping Katrina change many people back to the reality.

99. Perhaps it's time to open up a history book?
I would guess that you couldn't possibly be any older than a teenager who has just become politically aware, and raised in a staunch right-wing family. You haven't been exposed much to the real world if you actually think Bush is the "greatest President". (And you probably rely on Fox News for all the information about your world, to boot)

And if you're actually a lot older than I think, then sadly, your position is historically disoriented at best, and at worst, well, I'm too moral to say those words here.

In the most rational of terms, to declare someone the "greatest", who _everyone knows_ delayed his response to the hurricane disaster, and who, obvious to all by now, lied the nation into the Iraq war, is 1) the equivalent of beating a hornet's nest with a stick for fun (understandable if you're a teenager), or a 2) sign of abject stupidity and/or wanton destruction of the republic.

And, in other news, he proposed cutting proposals.

They spent over $400 million in SE Louisiana. Something like $250 million had been proposed to be spent.

Less than half the overall NG is in Iraq. Somewhat more than half of Louisiana's is in Iraq. But the amount of NG heading to SELA is greater than all of LA's NG.

The third that remained could have been called up on Sunday. But wasn't.

Whenever a republican says "we shouldn't try to assign blame here", it's because he's the one to blame. Whenever a republican says "I hope nobody tries to play politics with this", it's because they are politically vulnerable.

Fucking news flash:

We are ALL victims of this disaster called the Bush Administration. And the best way to help ALL of the victims of this disaster is to end it.

20. Popular Mechanics predicted this... oddly, on 9/11/01:
http://www.popularmechanics.com/science/research/1282151.html

From the magazine's 9/11/01 issue:

"In New Orleans, you never get above sea level, so you're always going to be isolated during a strong hurricane," says Kay Wilkins of the southeast Louisiana chapter of the American Red Cross.

During a strong hurricane, the city could be inundated with water blocking all streets in and out for days, leaving people stranded without electricity and access to clean drinking water. Many also could die because the city has few buildings that could withstand the sustained 96- to 100-mph winds and 6- to 8-ft. storm surges of a Category 2 hurricane. Moving to higher elevations would be just as dangerous as staying on low ground. Had Camille, a Category 5 storm, made landfall at New Orleans, instead of losing her punch before arriving, her winds would have blown twice as hard and her storm surge would have been three times as high.

someone who doesn't have such severe mental limitations.

Many people have anticipated the breach of the levees. That is why Louisiana officials and others have begged for money to repair and raise the levees. That's why they objected when money budgetted for that purpose was cut drastically to fund the war for George's sandbox.

The man is an incompetent idiot, a liar and a murderer. We should demand his removal.

They've been warning about this since the levees were built! I mean Really, I could understand this type of response from "Joe Trailer-park," but not from a guy who spent years running for President.

It's like "Joe Trailer-park" saying, "I don't think anyone ever anticipated that a Mobile Home could be destroyed by a Tornado" (or a Hurricane). :banghead:

"The president don't need to be president no more. He ain't doing his job!"

Then the man went on to say that he had had no food and only 1 small container of water in 2 days and he was getting desperate. He said he was poor and had no means to do anything with so that he was going to take some gasoline out of a empty car nearby so he could go somewhere for help. If anyone wanted to call that looting, that would be fine with him, but to him it was SURVIVAL!

Did I hear this on AAR?

49. Hurricane "Pam"
"In the years since then, local officials have warned that a catastrophic storm was inevitable and sought more funding to improve the area's hurricane preparedness to handle larger storms. In July 2004, for instance, federal, state and local officials staged a simulation in which a "Hurricane Pam" slammed into New Orleans with 120 m.p.h. winds and created havoc that was eerily similar to that of Hurricane Katrina, including widespread building damage and death.

"Since 1995, we've been replaying these scenarios out in various degrees. As we got together to do these, the people in the parishes would say, `Make them as bad as possible so we can get some attention,' " said Suhayda, who participated in the Hurricane Pam exercises."

For those that ever heard Tommy Lasorda's reply to a question from a radio interviewer following a Dodger loss to whoever Dave Kingman was playing for the night he hit four home runs (the question was: 'What do you have to say about Dave Kingman's performance tonight?'...well that's the only response I can think of for bush's comment here.

By the way, his, Lasorda's reply, which he repeated a dozen or more times, was: 'Jeeesus f**kin' Christ...Jeeesus f**ckin' Christ...How in hell can you ask me that?...Jeesus f**cking' Christ...Dave Kingman?...Jeesus f**ckin' Christ....'

Unless someone can show me that they fired the strategists who lost the last 3 elections, this is my prediction.

109. The top DEMs are incapable. Someone, please, prove me wrong.
They did not do it on the Iraq War, 9-11 "mistakes", election fraud in 2000, 2002 & 2004, Gannon/media propaganda, the DSM, the Swift-boats- why am I supposed to expect them to change now?

149. What is REALLY Bothering me
What really is bothering me is that the Governor of Louisiana is a Democrat and The Resident declared the State of Louisiana a Federal Disaster Area the day before the hurricane landed.

And then she was very slow ordering the looting stopped.

Freepers are having all sorts of good fun with those facts.

I hate to say it, but so far he's been doing a better job down there than Governor Janet Blanco.

:argh:

103. I predict all "star" DEMs will give him a free pass.
They will even sit by while the media blames them & Clinton- just like they did over 9-11.

The strategists who lost the last 3 election do not allow them to blame Bush for anything important.

Use their handling of 9-11, pre-iraq war, the Swift-Boat vets and DSM scandal as a template for what they will do.

I'll be suprised to see a sea change at this point.

93. The Bush administration comes up with another alibi.
They were totally unprepared. Check that. They made this country less prepared for such a disaster, even though the federal government has been putting more emphasis on the Mississippi Basin for grain shipments at the expense of the Great Lakes. The Chicago Board of Trade recently placed more emphasis on Mississippi River ports for national grain storage and phased out Great Lakes ports. Locks are being upgraded on the river to accommodate larger barges. Grain prices paid to farmers are more tied to the condition of the Mississippi ports.

Personally, I think you need to be diverse and not have all of your eggs in one basket. Yeah, upgrade the river's locks, but keep our Great Lake ports up-to-date in the event such an emergency occurs and our shipments come to a screeching halt.

More of that Washington foresight, I guess.

not even when it's happening to their sheeple!! :banghead: It's as if they're in some kind of dream world and they don't want to leave. I talked to one of the sheeple this morning and she expressed the hope that the American people would take this time during this national diaster to unite! and "work with" the adminisration!!!! I just don't get it. I fear that if we speak out about the gross mishandling of the victims, the powers that be will take that as being anti-American, or as being a terrorist, or whatever they're currently calling dissention.
I cannot comprehend a president sitting on his hands for days--well, maybe he was finishing his reading about SALT or finishing My Pet Goat.........he is so-o busy. BTW where's the Congress??? Where's Cheney? (I heard he's still on vacation in WY). If all of these people could hurry back to Washington for Terry Shiavo why can't they show up now----for millions of distressed, living, citizens? UNFORGIVEABLE!!!

The White House is panic stricken and thrown into chaos as a menacing ball of fire comes over the Horizin. No one could have anticipated this impending doom. Live in fear we're all going to die. We must attack the ball of fire now! We can't allow the terrorists to see that we are weak minded. Our Leader, George Bush, would have taken astronomy to better understand this ball of fire threatening the nation this day. Just like it did yesterday. But astronomy exceeed his two sallalable limit on words. So he was unable to inform the admissions director that he needed to take the course.

132.  Army Corps of Engineers budget for levee construction in NO. is slashed!
<snip>
June 2004: The Army Corps of Engineers budget for levee construction in New Orleans is slashed. Jefferson Parish emergency management chiefs Walter Maestri comments: "It appears that the money has been moved in the president's budget to handle homeland security and the war in Iraq, and I suppose that's the price we pay."

June 2005: Funding for the New Orleans district of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is cut by a record $71.2 million. One of the hardest-hit areas is the Southeast Louisiana Urban Flood Control Project, which was created after the May 1995 flood to improve drainage in Jefferson, Orleans and St. Tammany parishes.

137. Maybe Bush WILL kill us all
Really fucking unbelievable. I went to New Orleans/Gulf coast once in 1991. I LOVED it. I loved that city. So unique. And the people, The Blacks, the Whites, the Cajuns were some of the nicest people I've ever met. Anybody that ever goes there KNOWS the levees could break and that NO was always this close to a disaster. Everyone holds their breath everytime hurricane season comes around and I suppose it would be too much for Bush to even watch the fucking weather channel for five minutes.

GOD deliver us from this nightmare. It's bad enough that nature can be such a killer but this idiocy is killing us.
